San Francisco Buttermilk Biscuits from TV Food and Drink - Brought ...

photo.JPG
photo.JPG

On Friday, everyone asked me at work with vibrant hopeful faces, ?What are you gonna do in San Francisco, Gary??

?I?m gonna sit on Sean?s couch, drink coffee and watch tv.?

Then everyone at work looked at me with sadness and pity slivers.

Why they expected more out of me is a mystery. When regularly asked, ?What are you doing this weekend, Gary?? I always answer the same: ?I?m going to stay home and put things away where they belong!?

photo.JPG

Because I don?t travel well, I close my eyes once I?m in my seat on the plane and imagine all the fun things I can do in San Francisco? bay cruise, cable car museum, Coit Tower, Castro Theatre. ?I continue to think about them as I sit on Sean?s oversize Crate and Barrel end chair and watch Food Network all Saturday long in my bedtime stretchy shorts and a slightly rough Indian blanket wrapped around my legs while Sean suggests activities for us:

?We could walk around Haight and see parts of the city we don?t normally see.?
?No.?
?Let?s go to Union Square and look for New Year?s clothes.?
?Why??
?We can go to Pearl?s and get hamburgers.?
?Stop talking. ?I can?t hear Pioneer Woman.?

From time to time, I?ll play with the new cat, Toby. ?He gets his weekend exercise flailing around trying to catch a bushel of colored feathers attached to the end of a plastic stick. ?I get my exercise shaking the stick.

photo.JPG

I would have slept in until noon, but because I don?t drink anymore, that?s nearly impossible now. My eyes opened at 8am. So I dragged myself into the living room, closed all the curtains Sean had opened to let the sun shine in, plopped down in my usual spot and looked for the remote control. It was on the far side of the couch, so when Sean got back from picking up everything he needed to make buttermilk biscuits, I asked him to ?hand it to me.

I like San Francisco. ?But more than San Francisco I like Sean. ?He says things like, ?I?m never eating pizza again!? and ?The Pioneer Woman looks like a fat Molly Ringwald,? and makes me breakfast so I have more time to channel surf. ?It?s in the mid-seventies in San Francisco today. I?m totally gonna get caught up on The Mindy Project.

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, chilled, plus additional for brushing

UPDATE 2-Baseball-Giants blank Tigers to extend series lead

* Giants to take 2-0 series lead to Detroit

* Pence involved in both San Francisco runs (Adds quotes, details)

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The San Francisco Giants played small-ball to perfection and blanked the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Thursday to make a bold move in pursuit of their second World Series title in three years.

San Francisco managed only five hits, all singles, but scored on a double-play in the seventh and a sacrifice fly an inning later to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

"It's the best of seven, we're up 2-0," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. "That's the way we have to look at it. It's the best of seven. It's great to get off to a good start.

"We're heading to Detroit and playing in their ballpark, and you keep pushing. That's what you do at this point. We don't, believe me, take anything for granted," he added.

"You go out there and you play hard every game, and two days from now is our biggest game, and that's how we approach it."

Of the 52 times a team has taken a 2-0 lead in the World Series, 41 have gone on to win the crown. Game Three is at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday.

Hunter Pence was involved in both Giants runs, racing home from third on a bases-loaded double-play and then lofting a sacrifice fly to right that scored Angel Pagan.

Pence played down the importance of winning the first two games before the series shifts to Motown for the next three, if necessary.

"It means we've got two more wins," he said. "That's the goal. And they've still got four. I try to keep it as simple as possible. The team that wins four games wins the World Series, and we've got to stay as focused as ever and continue to push."

Detroit was held to two hits by Giants starter Madison Bumgarner and relievers Santiago Casilla and Sergio Romo, failing to reach second base after the second inning.

Bumgarner, who got the win, had been yanked from the starting rotation after a horrible performance in Game One of the National League Championship Series against St. Louis.

"The biggest thing was just mixing it in and out and up and down, trying to keep them off balance the best we could," said Bumgarner, who entered the game 0-2 during the postseason with a lofty 11.25 earned run average.

"Every pitch felt pretty good tonight. Felt a lot better than it has been the last few games."

FIELDER NAILED

The Tigers' lone offensive threat came in the second when Delmon Young doubled into the left-field corner but Prince Fielder, trying to score from first, was nailed at the plate on a relay throw to Buster Posey by second baseman Marco Scutaro.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland scoffed at the notion that the Giants have had luck on their side in the first two games, saying "they've earned everything they've got".

"Up to this point they've outplayed us," he said. "They did a little bit better than us today. They did quite a bit better than us yesterday. But I always tip my hat.

"I mean, they're playing good. They're playing like the Giants play, and we expected that coming in. They're good. They're really good."

San Francisco won the World Series in 2010 with a five-game demolition of the Texas Rangers.

The Giants, who beat the Tigers 8-3 in Wednesday's series opener, recovered from two-game hole with three straight wins to beat Cincinnati in the best-of-five National League Division Series.

In the Championship Series, they won another three do-or-die games to down the St Louis Cardinals.

Bochy said "you go out there and you play hard and you see what happens" every time you suit up.

"You don't really look at where you're at," he said. "You go out there to win every game. And if you do that and do it in the right way, you'll see where you're at when it's all over.

"Don't get caught up in you're 2 and 0 or 0 and 2. You go out there and play hard for nine innings.

"These guys did a great job of it in Cincinnati and St. Louis, and that's the way we have to keep doing it here."

Tigers starter Doug Fister was an unlucky loser, giving up just four hits and one run over six innings. (Editing by John O'Brien)

Can Pals help kids get their voices heard (video)

Can Pals help kids get their voices heard

Message from Me isn't the only way Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Labis helping kids communicate. The lab's Hear Me team has come up with Can Pals, a clever twist on the tin can phone that helps students share their stories with the world. Kids record their non-fictional tales on computers or via mics brought in by the Hear Me team, who will edit and upload them to the site and transfer them onto the electronic cans. Afterwards, kids can draw a picture or add some text to a label, which is adhered to the outside.

The Hear Me team then brings them to another school, where the stories are shared with other students, who can pull off the labels and respond to the speakers. The group has also designed CanEX displays that are already at some businesses around town, letting customers catch a glimpse into the lives of local children. CREATE calls it an "empowerment tool for advocacy" -- we can't help but refer to it as This American Life or The Moth for kids. Either way, pretty cool.

Germany ready to train Mali forces, not send combat troops

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Tuesday pledged to support efforts to stabilise Mali, where armed Islamists have seized control of the north, but ruled out sending combat troops.

Speaking after a meeting with Romano Prodi, the United Nations special envoy to the region, Westerwelle calledthe situation in the west African nation "extremely worrying".

"The human rights situation, the security situation, the humanitarian situation, it's all really dismal," he said.

"For us, it's about European and German readiness for support, not about combat troops," added the minister, stressing this help could come in the shape of "training and development".

Western governments are fearful northern Mali could become a sanctuary for radicals after Al-Qaeda's north African branch and other armed Islamist groups seized the area following a March coup.

After a summit meeting on Friday, European leaders vowed to back up an international military force and train Malian defence forces.

"If northern Mali falls, if terrorist training camps are set up there, if a safe haven can be built for the terrorists of the world, that threatens not only Mali, the region and the north African states, but also us in Europe," said Westerwelle.

West African regional bloc ECOWAS has assembled a force of some 3,000 troops to try to retake Mali's desert north, an area roughly the size of France.

On October 13, the UN Security Council gave ECOWAS 45 days to come up with a detailed plan on how it intended to recapture the vast, sparsely populated terrain.

"We are talking about a mission that would be operated by the African states and for which they would be responsible, on the basis of a decision of the UN Security Council," Westerwelle stressed.

Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday judged the Malian forces "too weak to act" and said they needed help from outside.

Europe "could not accept that international terrorism has a safe refuge in the north of the country," Merkel insisted.

For his part, former European Commission president Prodi said that any Western action could not be a "direct intervention" and warned that "the situation in the north is still the most difficult."

Defeating the Dining Hall | ASU News | The State Press | Arizona ...

Think outside the norm.

The university food situation is a love-or-hate relationship between student and dining hall. While many college applicants decide upon their school based on academics or housing, others choose based solely on the dining hall. It entices them with an almost unlimited amount of food, and they don?t even have to pay the check.

Pizza day is every day.

Some new arrivals spend every moment of their free time soaking in the experience of so much food and so little plate space.

But ? two weeks later ? the magic is gone.

The pizza looks as though it were made of plastic, the hamburgers drip with grease, everything on the salad bar starts to taste like chemicals. And oh, look, they?re serving that weird lo mein dish again.

Students resort to spending all their M&G on a carton of waffle fries at Chick-fil-A or a meatball marinara foot-long at Subway, just to taste something moderately different.

And then there are those who love to cook but are inhibited by dirty communal kitchens and the few microwaveable meals in their budget: Top Ramen, Kraft Easy Mac and Hot Pockets.

Escape from the dining hall drudgery can seem impossible. The hungry forager is buried in fleeting suggestions about microwaveable options on Facebook and Twitter.

But here are some suggestions to cultivate your own college cuisine.

Think outside the microwave

Sure, you can buy the freezer-burnt Lean Cuisine lasagnas and the Betty Crocker Warm Delights brownies, but where is the fun in that? Wouldn?t you rather taste lasagna made with wonton-wrapper noodles, or homemade brownies made in a coffee mug?

Experimentation with strange ingredients is just part of the fun of unconventional cooking. Substitute ingredients can inspire a new staple in your college diet. For example, instead of making homemade meringue from egg whites, use a meringue cookies on lemon pudding in tartlet shells for a makeshift lemon meringue pie. A new, weird idea could either gratify or aggravate your taste buds. Either way, you?ll have something to look back and laugh about.

The Greek salad converts to ramen in this refreshing Mediterranean dish.

?

Spice and dice

Load your favorite spices, sauces and seasonings into your favorite packaged microwaveable foods for a new and different flavor. After all, a small bottle of basil costs around $1.75 and you only use about one tablespoon at a time. Try adding some oregano to your Easy Mac or some Sriracha to your ramen. Load up on veggies from your dining hall?s salad bar and add them to your favorite microwaveable pasta dishes. Spices and sauces don?t cost much and last for a long time, so you can continue to experiment.

When your budget won?t allow for an order of Buffalo wings, this dish will help curb the craving during Sunday football.

Reject the heavy, sluggish dining hall cuisine for this lighter alternative.

?

Practical portions

The hardest part about deciding to pursue an out-of-the-box meal in your dorm room is the prospect of spending your meager funds on rotten vegetables and weird sauces.

You can overcome this feeling by discovering different ways to use the same ingredients. There are at least 100 ways to incorporate spaghetti sauce into dorm room meals and at least ten processed meals that would taste ten times better with fresh vegetables. The presence of ingredients in your refrigerator will motivate you to explore your personal menu. Who knows, maybe you?ll end up drudging over to the dining hall less than you expected. Which is good, because you probably need a break from it right about now.

Give your ramen a marinara makeover.

Break the carbohydrate coma by adding the vegetables we sometimes miss when rushing to classes.

Fridge/freezer magic

Another excuse to revert to the depths of the dining hall may lie in the time it takes to prepare these meals. But your proactivity will pay off in the long run. Take some time to chop vegetables and store them in plastic bags, or prepare ramen and save it for later in the refrigerator. There they will stay for you to add to your dishes or warm up as you please, in a matter of minutes.

You can also get creative with your freezer. Purchase swizzle stick ice cube trays at the beginning of the year and freeze your favorite yogurt or juice for homemade popsicles. You can also freeze any ingredients you don?t think you will use immediately in plastic bags and thaw them out when you?re craving them. Dorm room food must be quick, tasty and flexible with limited supplies. Preparing ahead of time will ensure that you are ready for all of these guidelines during the 3 a.m. hunger attack.

Escape to Italy with this tangy combination of tomatoes, basil and mozzarella.

Pasta salads of summers past inspired this zesty assemblage.

?

Bring the right equipment

Sure, everyone will flaunt that designer Target plate and the portable coffee mug. But in order to expand your meal possibilities, you?ll need to bring equipment with multiple uses. While the designer plates and portable mugs are pretty snazzy, make sure you bring a microwaveable plate for your pizzas and a regular mug for your brownies. Tupperware containers and plastic bags will prove to be more helpful than just keeping your staples and paper clips in one place. And don?t underestimate the quirky utensils like soup bowls that come fully equipped with soupspoons and chopsticks. These accessories will benefit your new-fangled fast food a bigger and your college experience.

While it may seem like too much effort to cook from a dorm room, the time you take to be creative outside of the dining hall is priceless. The food will taste a thousand times better than something you glopped onto your plate in the dining hall, and a million times better than something you tore out of a cardboard box. So, if you are still gung-ho about the dining hall then by all means stretch those pre-paid meal plans. But when you get tired of the dining hall cookery, as you inevitably will, try some of these and rejoice at your newfound culinary skills.

Top Ramen directions specify the need of a pot and a stove. Use these revised directions when a microwave is your only appliance.

3 Powerful Tips To Getting Over Your Ex

3 Powerful Tips to Getting Over Your Ex

No one ever said that breaking up with a loved one is ever easy. The most difficult part about this tragedy comes AFTER the break up. Soon after you both part from each other, your mind may be filled with tons of emotions of memories of you and your ex once being happily together. Your emotions will run at lightning speeds and you frequently feel hopeless about what lies ahead for your future, but it's something you will need to get over in order for you to finally move on and enjoy life again.

Many couples have been through this difficult event during some point in their lives. The main factor in moving on is your will and desire to want to move on. If you want to, then you will succeed. It will surely take a while for the pain to subside, but in the end it will be the best thing you can do for yourself. Life is full of wonderful and pleasant surprises ahead, and that's why you need to eventually accept your break up in order to welcome future opportunities of meeting new people. Here are three valuable tips to help you finally get over your ex:

1. Confront Your Pain and Let It All Out

I'm not gonna lie. There will be the turbulence of emotions running through your mind and your heart will feel a pain it's never imagined it can feel before, but if you have the desire to move on and let the pain subside, you will have to face your pain and accept it for what it is. Take some time to let all of your emotions of anger, sadness, and pain out by crying it out. This is a time of reflection with yourself and with what went wrong with you and your ex. Be sure you go through this period alone, meaning no receiving advice from others, including your closest friends and family. They may mean well by giving you their advice, but they aren't you and aren't experiencing the tragedy of your break up. So what they say is easier said than done. By the end of this week after having confronted your pain, you will clearly feel a difference in your spirits and emotions as it will have allowed you to purge out all that emotional baggage you've been keeping inside ever since the break up.

2. Be Conscious and Stop Thinking About Your Ex

After you've given yourself time to cry it out during the first step, you will then move on to this next one. You will need to completely remove anything from your home that brings back any traces of memories of your ex. This includes pictures of you two, pictures of him/her, gifts and meaningful items you both bought together, etc. Lock up the collections of love songs that have meaning behind it and remind you of your times together. Mute saddening love songs that will trigger your emotions for your ex to come back. Anything that brings forth memories of your ex will hinder you from getting over them, so please, do yourself a favor during this stage of overcoming your break up and store that baggage up so you can move forward to step three.

3. Look Forward To The Future

Keeping an optimistic outlook of your dating future may seem difficult, if not impossible, because you have just gone through what seems like one of the most tragic of all situations in your life. But in order to break through fully and move on for once and for all, you will have to welcome future opportunities with dating other people. You will soon realize that you can and will meet someone new who might be much better than your ex has ever been! Surround yourself with positive vibes and hang out at places where you can meet new people. You will be intrigued and amazed with how much fun you've been missing out on ever since your break up. Your spirits will turn around for the better and you will realize how easy it is to actually get over your ex... I wouldn't be surprised if you actually asked, "what ex".

PFT: 49er wants to atone for killer fumbles

Everson Griffen, Matthew StaffordAP

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen will be away from the team, after the sudden and unexpected death of his mother on Wednesday.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Griffen?s mother was visiting her son in the Twin Cities when she died. The cause is not yet known. The Vikings were in meetings when Eden Prairie contacted the Vikings, and broke the news to Griffen.

?As you can imagine, it was tough,? Frazier said, via Judd Zulgad of 1500ESPN.com. ?There was nothing that could have prepared him for that news. He wasn?t here [Thursday]. I?m not sure what his status will be going forward.

?Our prayers as an organization, as well as his teammates, are with him and his family. This is a difficult time for him, as you can imagine, and we?ll be there to support him as best we can. . . . He loved his mom, like we all do. And to have no clue that something like this was on the horizon it was tough. It?s still tough, obviously.?

Griffen is tied for the team lead with three sacks, but has impressed the Vikings with his maturity after some off-field issues after his rookie season.

?Everson means a lot to me, like all our guys do, and I?ve seen the maturation in his life,? Frazier said. ?I told him that [Wednesday] night. I know his mom would be so proud of how he has grown up and become a young man that has made her very proud. It?s hard to see him hurting. I lost my mother not long ago, I know what that experience is like, and it?s hard. It?s hard.?

Frazier said he didn?t know when Griffen would rejoin the team, leaving that up to him.

?It?s purely up to him when,? Frazier said. ?There?s no timetable. I explained that to him,? Frazier said. ?He needs to go through the grieving process properly and don?t be thinking about football. Just doing whatever he needs to do away from football. His mom was very, very close to him. This is going to be a tough deal for him.?

Our thoughts are with Griffen and his entire family.

Complex Brains Existed 520 Million Years Ago In Cockroach Relative

insect brain evolution 520 million years arthropod fossil

Fossil of Fuxianhuia courtesy of Xiaoya Ma

Your everyday cockroach might not seem terribly intelligent. But new fossil evidence from 520 million years ago suggests that this insidious insect might have had some surprisingly smart early ancestors.

Cockroaches and other insects belong to a group called the arthropods, which arose some 540 million years ago. A new Chinese fossil is yielding new insights into how the arthropod brain evolved and shows that within the first 20 million years of the group?s emergence, the arthropod brain had already become surprisingly advanced. The new findings are based on a three-inch-long fossil arthropod known as Fuxianhuia protensa, found in what is now China?s Yunnan Province and were described online October 10 in Nature (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group).

?The fossil provides the most convincing, and certainly the oldest, description of nervous-system tissue in a fossil arthropod,? Graham Budd, of Uppsala University?s Department of Earth Sciences, wrote in an accompanying essay published in the same issue of Nature. The evidence for this brain material consists of ?dark, iron-rich mineral traces,? Budd noted, which can be interpreted as sections of a multi-part brain.

Fuxianhuia?s body is understandably primitive, which is par for the prehistoric course, given that it lived some 290 million years before the dinosaurs emerged. But the brain architecture was a surprise. After examining the fossil under a dissecting microscope, the researchers found that this animal had three distinct, closely situated brain sections. It also has three optic neuropils, which are connected by nerve fibers. The well-preserved fossil even shows hints of linking fibers that connected these separate areas. ?No one expected such an advanced brain would have evolved so early in the history of multicellular animals,? Nicholas Strausfeld, a neurobiologist at the University of Arizona and co-author on the new paper, said in a prepared statement.

These findings might seem clear cut, but they have been made in ?one of the most controversial and interesting arthropod species to boot, Fuxianhuia,? Budd noted.?Fuxianhuia has typically been classified as an early arthropod that was probably close to the common ancestor of all other hard-bodied invertebrates?of which there are more than 1.1 million described extant species. But the brain of this early creature bears a striking similarity to the brains of common bugs (the group that includes insects and arachnids) and malacostracans, (the group that includes crabs and lobsters), which have the three main brain sections and the connected optic neuropils. Another major group of arthropods, however, called the branchiopods (which includes brine shrimp and Daphnia water fleas) that emerged later, have much simpler brains with only two optic neuropils that are not connected like those in Fuxianhuia.

Strausfeld and his colleagues suggest that the new finding points to a malacostracan-type origin for modern day insects?rather than an ancestral primitive brain that more closely resembled that of Daphnia. If that is the case, ?it is remarkable how constant the ground pattern of the nervous system has remained,? Strausfeld said. This early complexity?especially in the optic area?could help to explain the stunning diversity of visual abilities in modern day relatives, such as compound eye vision.

Another possibility, albeit a controversial one, is that Fuxianhuia is, indeed, ancestral to all of these groups but the brains of those in the branchiopods actually simplified over time. ?Either way,? Budd noted, the findings ?will prompt hasty reexamination of many old specimens, and quite possibly some recasting of recent theories.?

(AP) ? Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Paul Ryan pull up a couple of chairs for a vice presidential debate that has mushroomed in importance since Mitt Romney's strong showing in the first presidential faceoff. This time, it's the Obama team looking to put the brakes on the other guy's momentum.

The veep showdown matches up two skilled politicians with strong policy credentials and very different styles. It's 69-year-old Biden's folksy appeal and solid vice presidential portfolio vs. 42-year-old Ryan's intensity and extensive knowledge of the federal budget and economy from 14 years in Congress.

Like the second installment in a miniseries, it will help to shape the campaign narrative until Romney and Obama themselves meet up again Tuesday. Obama is eager to change the vibe after his lackluster performance in the first debate and Romney's recent gains in the polls. Romney, for his part, is hoping that a strong Ryan performance will help propel Republicans forward on an energetic drive through the campaign's final weeks.

The 90-minute debate at Centre College, a liberal arts school with just 1,340 students in tiny Danville, is sure to draw a television audience of tens of millions. But it's unlikely to eclipse the 70 million who tuned in to watch Biden face off with Republican firebrand Sarah Palin four years ago.

That debate was more of a curiosity: It allowed Palin to outdo Biden in folksiness and recover from a series of painfully awkward media interviews but did little to alter the trajectory of the race.

"Normally vice presidential debates are good political theater and sort of interesting from a talent scout standpoint, as you evaluate the up-and-comers on the political stage," says Alan Schroeder, author of a book on presidential debates. "But this year could be different because of the negative reviews of Obama's performance. That heightens expectations for this second debate."

"Joe just needs to be Joe," Obama said, when asked his advice for the vice president in an interview Wednesday with ABC News.

Senior Obama adviser David Axelrod, appearing Thursday morning on "CBS This Morning," said he believes "the big challenge for him is to pin Congressman Ryan down."

"Right now the Romney campaign is running away from some of their positions like unwanted stepchildren," Axelrod said.

Thursday was a rare day when the political activities of the running mates were taking center stage and those of Obama and Romney were seen as secondary. But with just 26 days left until the election and the race still tight, neither Obama nor Romney was completely ceding the spotlight. The president was hunting for votes in Florida while his GOP opponent devoted time to North Carolina, another battleground.

Thursday's debate, moderated by Martha Raddatz of ABC News, will cover both foreign and domestic topics. The debate is to be divided into nine 10-minute segments. At the outset, Raddatz will ask an opening question, and each candidate will have two minutes to respond.

Romney and Obama both predicted strong performances by their No. 2s.

"I think Paul Ryan will do great," Romney told supporters at a town hall meeting Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

He said the debates offer people a rare chance to see the candidates directly, unfiltered by misleading and negative ads.

The GOP nominee said he'd seen some of the anti-Romney TV ads running in Ohio that morning, and added, "It's a good thing I don't do that very often because my blood pressure would be very high."

Obama, in a radio interview Wednesday with Tom Joyner, said he'd been "too polite" in his debate with Romney ? a sure sign that Biden won't be going easy on Ryan. And that Obama won't make the same mistake in the next two presidential debates, on Tuesday in Hempstead, N.Y., and Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

"We've got four weeks left in the election, and we're going to take it to him," Obama said.

Later, in an interview with "ABC World News," Obama minimized the importance of his poor first debate performance, saying: "Gov. Romney had a good night. I had a bad night. It's not the first time I've had a bad night."

He added, "What's important is the fundamentals of what this race is about haven't changed."

The president, who had tried to lower expectations for his own performance ahead of last week's debate, predicted in his radio interview that Biden would be "terrific."

Ryan signaled he's ready for whatever Biden sends his way.

"I'm not intimidated, I'm actually excited about it," he said on CNN.

Both Biden and Ryan head into the debate with vulnerabilities: Biden must rein in a freewheeling manner that can be endearing but also produces plenty of gaffes. Ryan hasn't been in a campaign debate for more than a decade and is light on foreign policy experience, a sharp contrast to the vice president, a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Ryan also will need to find a way to reinforce Romney's policy positions without selling out his own, more conservative credentials.

Romney adviser Kevin Madden signaled in advance that Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, would distance himself from his past proposals for sharp budget cuts.

"You have to remember that there is a Romney-Ryan ticket and there's one presidential candidate ? there's one person at the top of the ticket ? so the focus again will be on what Gov. Romney's plan is for reforming Washington," Madden said.

Casino Groups Could Be Pushing to Put Gambling on 2014 Ballot ...

After Genting Group's aggressive push to shove gambling down the throat of the Florida legislature this year failed spectacularly, gambling interests have taken a more low key approach to eventually opening the sunshine state to more gaming. They may be looking to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2014, but could also just be using that as a tactical move to force the legislature's hand.

New Jobs and Revenues for Florida, a political action committee, has raised just under $1 million since it was founded in April. Genting has denied involvement with the group, but most of the groups money has come from Bayfront 2011 Development, LLC or Resorts World Miami, LLC, two Genting connected companies.

According to Miami Today, the PAC is preparing efforts to get an amendment on the 2014 ballot.

"They're doing a lot of legal analysis and polling analysis," No Casinos for Florida President John Sowinski told the paper, "which tells me they're having a hard time finding something that the voters will have the stomach for."

Though, Sowinski also theorizes that the threat of a ballot measure could just be used to move the legislature's hand. The ballot measure could, for instance, provide for a lot less funding for the state than could a deal worked out directly with the legislature.

However, other gambling interests, including Las Vegas Sands, say they still believe the best way to get gambling legalized in Florida is directly though the legislature. A ballot measure would have to be approved by 60 percent of all voters.

Genting shook the state when it announced it had bought the current site of the Miami Herald and unveiled plans to turn it into an ostentatious resort centered around a full-service casino. After failing to get gambling laws changed however, the company announced scaled-down plans without a casino.

Serbia Wants Kosovo Talks at Technical Level :: Balkan Insight

Aleksandar Vulin, the Head of the Government Office for Kosovo, says the talks with Kosovo will be technical rather than political in nature, and that they would focus on energy and telecommunications.

He also stressed that Serbia is waiting for "the other side" before starting the talks, which he described as "a two-way street?.

EU-mediated talks between Belgrade and Pristina started in March 2011 with the aim of normalising relations between the two countries, both of which share a desire to join the EU one day.

The two sides have reached deals on trade, freedom of movement, the cadastral registry, mutual recognition of university diplomas, border control management and on the representation of Kosovo at regional meetings.

But not all of the agreements have been implemented.

Vulin asserted that this government, unlike the previous one, maintained good communications with the Serbs in Kosovo, and was regularly harmonizing issues with them.

"There will be neither negotiations nor a platform if the Serbs from Kosovo do not have their say about it," he was quoted as saying.

Vulin said that Serbia's platform on Kosovo would be presented to the public shortly.

?The main points were set down in President Tomislav Nikolic's speech at the UN General Assembly, and what he said to [EU High Representative Catherine] Ashton, and all the concrete proposals and ideas will be derived from that,? Vulin said.

Vulin visited the Kosovo Serbs on Monday and said that the conditions under which the Serbs lived were "hellishly difficult".

According to Vulin, the problems of the Serbs in Kosovo stem from the economy and violence, while their biggest problem was security.

He noted that Serbia was already working on the economic issues, and those related to documentation, adding that the government is going to work to improve the conditions for school children, including their transport to school, and on securing the electricity supply in Serb-run northern Kosovo in the forthcoming months.

U.S. breaks up alleged Russian high-tech smuggling network

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Justice Department said on Wednesday it had broken up an elaborate network aimed at illegally acquiring U.S.-made microelectronic components for Russian military and spy agencies.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, New York unsealed an indictment charging 11 alleged participants in the network, as well as companies based in Houston, Texas, and Moscow, with illegally exporting high-tech components from the United States to Russian security agencies. U.S. officials did not identify the American companies from whom the components were bought.

Prosecutors also charged Alexander Fishenko, an owner and executive of the Texas and Moscow companies, with operating in the United States as an unregistered agent of the Russian government by purchasing high-tech goods subject to strict U.S. export controls due to their potential use in military systems.

Two law enforcement officials said that Fishenko and seven alleged associates were being held in custody by U.S. authorities in Houston. One of the defendants was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday in Houston, and the others on Thursday.

It was not known if they had yet entered any pleas, one of the officials said late on Wednesday. He said that prosecutors expected to ask for those arrested to be transferred to the custody of federal authorities in Brooklyn.

Three other individuals charged in the indictment are currently in Russia, the official said.

As an adjunct to the indictment, the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security also issued an 82-page document adding 164 individuals and companies to a U.S. export control database known as the "entity list."

This list requires that export licenses be obtained from U.S. authorities before certain U.S.-made commodities are shipped to the named individuals.

The department alleged that these companies and individuals received, transshipped or otherwise facilitated the export of controlled technology to Fishenko and the other defendants facing indictment in the case.

EXTENSIVE SURVEILLANCE

A court document made public by prosecutors outlined further details of the government's case against those charged.

It alleged that Fishenko used a Houston company called Arc Electronics to acquire U.S.-made technology for Russian government agencies, including the Russian armed forces and Russia's principal domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service or FSB, a successor to the Soviet-era KGB.

According to the document, among electronic components that the procurement network sought were microcontrollers, microprocessors, static random access memory chips and analog-to-digital converters. Prosecutors claim that such items can be used for a wide variety of sensitive military and intelligence purposes, including radar and surveillance systems, missile guidance systems and detonation triggers.

During the U.S. investigation of the alleged procurement network, which began in July 2010, the U.S. government had engaged in extensive court-approved surveillance of the email and telephone communications of those arrested, the document says.

Prosecutors say that among items collected during the investigation were a letter in which an electronics production laboratory operated by the FSB allegedly complained that certain microchips - purchased from Arc in Houston through an affiliate of Fishenko's Moscow company - were defective and needed to be replaced.

Prosecutors say that when the Russia-based affiliate received the letter from the Russian intelligence agency, it forwarded it to Arc in Houston seeking replacements for the microchips.

At one point, in an effort to show their activities were innocent, Arc told Americans it had approached that it manufactured traffic lights, a U.S. official said.
