This is the second part in an interview series I?m doing asking the same five questions of creative professionals. ?The goal is hopefully to give young writers, filmmakers, artists, and musicians a more realistic view of what success (or ?breaking in?) looks like in each of these industries.

Kevin Miller is a screenwriter and filmmaker from Abbotsford, BC.? His many credits include the feature films No Saints for Sinners and After??as well as the documentaries spOILed and Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. Kevin?s latest film is also his directorial debut, a feature-length documentary called Hellbound?, which takes on the traditional doctrine of hell.? He also teaches screenwriting at film schools and conferences around the world.? I?m privileged to call such a smart and talented guy my friend.? Even if he is Canadian.

At what point did you consider yourself a success?

I still haven?t reached that point, to be honest. I saw an interview with Conan O?Brien the other night where he admitted that even after nearly two decades on TV, he still worries it?s all going to end 30 minutes from now. I can certainly identify with that.?I think every creative person?s deepest fear is that one day they will be revealed as a fraud.

Even though I?ve worked on a number of films, some of which have been well received and earned millions of dollars, I always feel like I have to put a footnote beneath each one explaining the parts that make me cringe.

On another level, with my current film, Hellbound?, I feel a huge step closer to feeling a bit more secure about my abilities. That?s because on this film, I have a much fuller sense of authorship than on any other. Typically, I?ve been a screenwriter, co-writer and/or associate producer. On this film, I raised the money, put the team together, wrote, directed and assisted in the editing of the film. And now I am helping to manage marketing and distribution as well. So while it?s far too early to tell if this film is a success, it is a tremendously satisfying creative experience. And the fact that our film has already earned the approval of so many of my friends and mentors helps me sleep a little better at night.

How long did it take you to get there?

Not sure if this question is relevant in light of my previous response. I?ll let you know when/if it happens. However, I can say there have been brief moments going all the way back to the first line of poetry I wrote in grade 5 where I?ve had a flash of insight that says, ?Hey, I think I might be onto something here.?

There?s always this gap between what you envision and what you finally create in the end. I can say I think that gap is closing steadily. But I think it?ll always be there.

Who do you look at in the movie industry as someone you respect, that is ?doing it right??

I?m a big fan of two types of filmmakers. The first are writer-directors like Paul Thomas Anderson, the Coen brothers and Darren Aronofsky who manage to retain their artistic integrity while employing the entire myth-making machinery of Hollywood to their advantage. These guys consistently produce beautiful, insightful and important films. I?m truly in awe of their work.

The other type of filmmaker I admire is exemplified by people like George Lucas and James Cameron. These guys aren?t content to simply make movies. They see so far beyond the curve that before they can even make their movies, they have to change the way movie-making is done. I can?t say I?m a huge fan of every film they?ve created. But I have a deep appreciation for their commitment to innovation and excellence. It?s also humbling to be reminded constantly of how small my mind is in comparison.

What?s the biggest surprise for how you expected life to be at your level vs. how it actually is?

The money! (Or lack thereof.) I think everyone enters this business thinking/hoping that one day they?ll win the lottery, so to speak. Not true. At least not in my case. I can?t complain?I live in a relatively new house on the edge of town, I?m able to treat my kids to nice presents at Christmas and so on. But I?ve been a freelancer for 12 years, and that doesn?t always equate to financial security. We have had many highs and lows over the years.

People also expect this line of work to be somewhat glamorous. I know I certainly did. However, you quickly learn that the glamorous moments?if they even happen?are fleeting at best. Most of the time I?m in the field, on a plane or in my office at home. I jokingly tell people that making movies is about long hours of self-torture and self-doubt punctuated by brief moments of elation. So celebrate those moments when you can.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to break in to screenwriting or filmmaking?

Two things:

1. There is no substitute for learning your craft. A few lucky people can fake it for a while. But if you want to have a long, fruitful career in this industry, you need to work, work, work. Educate yourself. If you?re a writer, write. If you?re a filmmaker, make films. I?ve learned more about making spoof movie trailers with my kids than I have on actual film sets.

2. You?re only as good as your network. Like any business, film making is based primarily on relationships. I?ve gotten most of my jobs through connections from previous projects. What you know?and are able to do?is important. But who you know is vital. The thing I would warn against is using networking as a form of procrastination. I know people who feel like they?re filmmakers or screenwriters just because they?re able to score meetings or because they?ve met someone famous. The only thing that makes you a screenwriter or a filmmaker is the credit on the screen.

How the video games industry is faring

Video game console makers Microsoft and Nintendo have reported earnings for the most recent quarter. This week, companies that make games will be issuing their quarterly reports.

Here's a look at reports and results for selected companies that make or sell video games.

? July 12: NPD Group reports that U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 29 percent in June to $700 million. It's the seventh consecutive month of decline. Sales of console and portable software ? the video games themselves ? fell 29 percent from a year earlier, while sales of hardware fell 45 percent. Sales of accessories grew 4 percent. Excluded are sales of used games and rentals as well as digital and social-network spending.

? July 19: Microsoft Corp. says it sold 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles, down from 1.7 million a year earlier, in what it calls a soft console market. Membership in its Xbox Live service increased more than 15 percent.

? July 25: Nintendo Co. says it sold 710,000 Wii units in the April-June quarter, down from 1.56 million a year ago. Nintendo is coming out with a successor, the Wii U, this year. It is forecasting 10.5 million units for the full fiscal year, which ends in March 2013.

Massive India blackout leaves 300 million without power

NEW DELHI?? A massive grid failure in Delhi and much of northern India left more than 300 million people without electricity on Monday in one of the worst blackouts to hit the country in more than a decade.

The lights in Delhi and seven states went out about 2 a.m and had not been restored by the morning rush-hour, leaving the capital's workers sweltering overnight, then stranded at metro stations in the morning as trains were cancelled.

Blackouts are frequent in much of the country, including major cities. Chaos reigned on Delhi's always-hectic roads as stop lights failed.

"I'm 45 minutes late for work. First, no power since 2 in the morning, then no water to take a shower and now the metro is delayed by 13 minutes after being stuck in traffic for half an hour," said 32-year-old Keshav Shah, who works in a multinational software company 30 km outside the capital.

"As if I wasn't dreading Monday enough, this had to happen."

Authorities made restoring services to hospitals and transport systems a priority. By mid-morning electricity had returned to parts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, a state with more people than Brazil. Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir were also hit.

"We'll find out the reason and see that such kind of things are avoided in the future," Ram Nayak, the head of India's state-run Power Grid Corporation, said.

"The biggest priority is to connect essential loads back to public transport systems, whether it be the rail or the airport, hospitals and other places," he told TV network CNN-IBN.

Officials at Delhi's international airport said flights were unaffected.

India has a peak-hour power deficit of about 12 percent, slowing the economy. Delhi's private power company, BSES , said northern India last suffered such a major outage in 2001.

About 40 percent of Indians, or 500 million people, lack electricity. Delays in opening new power plants and coal mines, among other things, have held back capacity.

Report: US presents Israel with Iran strike plan

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli newspaper reported Sunday that the Obama administration's top security official has briefed Israel on U.S. plans for a possible attack on Iran, seeking to reassure it that Washington is prepared to act militarily should diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear enrichment program.

A senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential talks, said the article in the Haaretz daily was incorrect.

Haaretz said National Security Adviser Tom Donilon laid out the plans before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a dinner at a visit to Israel earlier this month. It cited an unidentified senior American official as the source of its report, which came out as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was telling Israel he would back an Israeli military strike against Iran.

The American official also said Donilon shared information on U.S. weapons that could be used for such an attack, and on the U.S. military's ability to reach Iranian nuclear facilities buried deep underground, the newspaper said. It cited another U.S. official involved in the talks with Israel as concluding that "the time for a military operation against Iran has not yet come."

The Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential meeting, said, "Nothing in the article is correct. Donilon did not meet the prime minister for dinner, he did not meet him one-on-one, nor did he present operational plans to attack Iran." He had no information when asked if Donilon had discussed any kind of attack plans with any Israeli official. Haaretz said another Israeli official attended for part of the meeting.

The U.S. Embassy had no immediate comment. Haaretz cited Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, as declining to comment on the confidential discussion between Netanyahu and Donilon. The White House also declined comment.

Both Israel and the U.S. think Iran's ultimate aim is to develop weapons technology, and not just produce energy and medical isotopes as Tehran claims. U.S. officials are concerned that Israel might attack Iranian nuclear facilities prematurely, and have been trying to convince Israeli leaders they can depend on Washington to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly said they would not contract out their country's security to another nation.

In Jerusalem on Sunday, a top Romney foreign policy adviser told reporters, "If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability (to build a nuclear weapon), the governor would respect that decision." Romney also thinks the option of a U.S. attack should also be on the table.

TAKEN: Toddler Alyssa Barker was taken from her Helensville home.

A woman who watched the 6pm news tonight recognised the woman and child who were staying with her as Skye Mason and Alyssa Barker.

Alyssa was taken from her family home in the tiny settlement of Makaurau, north of Auckland, at about 3pm on Friday.

Mason also disappeared from this property at about this time after she had been welcomed into the home by Alyssa's parents.

She had been taken in by the family after they had taken pity on her for sleeping rough in the neighbourhood.

The woman who alerted police tonight of having Mason and Alyssa in her home appears to also have been a good Samaritan.

She had waited until the pair was asleep before she called the police at 9.15pm to notify them of her house guests.

Alyssa will soon be reunited with her family and 27-year-old Mason has been taken into police custody.

Police, who attended the Swanson address, said Alyssa was well and didn?t seem to be suffering any ill-effects as a result of her 36-hour absence.

Detective Inspector Stan Brown of Waitakere Police said he and his staff were delighted to be able to return Alyssa to her family and very grateful to media for their support during what was a nervous search.

"This is one story that does not have a tragic end for a child and for that, we are very happy."

Police earlier said Mason had a history of mental illness and a small criminal history.

At that time, the mountainous, sparsely populated nation was at the center of U.S. foreign policy. On leaving office, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned his successor, John F. Kennedy, that if Laos fell to the communists, all Southeast Asia could be lost as well.

While Vietnam ended up the focal point of America's "domino theory" foreign policy, Laos was drawn deeply into the conflict as the U.S. funded its anti-communist forces and bombed North Vietnamese supply lines and bases.

The U.S. dropped more than 2 million tons of bombs on the impoverished country during its "secret war" between 1964 and 1973 ? about a ton of ordnance for each Laotian man, woman and child. That exceeded the amount dropped on Germany and Japan together in World War II, making Laos the most heavily bombed nation per person in history.

Four decades later, American weapons are still claiming lives. When the war ended, about a third of some 270 million cluster bombs dropped on Laos had failed to detonate, leaving the country awash in unexploded munitions. More than 20,000 people have been killed by ordnance in postwar Laos, according to its government, and contamination throughout the country is a major barrier to agricultural development.

Cleanup has been excruciatingly slow. The Washington-based Legacies of War says only 1 percent of contaminated lands have been cleared and has called on Washington to provide far greater assistance. The State Department has provided $47 million since 1997, though a larger effort could make Laos "bomb-free in our lifetimes," California Rep. Mike Honda argued.

"Let us mend the wounds of the past together so that Laos can begin a new legacy of peace," said Honda, who is Japanese-American.

The U.S. is spending $9 million this year on cleanup operations for unexploded ordnance in Laos, but is likely to offer more in the coming days.

It is part of a larger Obama administration effort to reorient the direction of U.S. diplomacy and commercial policy as the world's most populous continent becomes the center of the global economy over the next century. It is also a reaction to China's expanding influence.

Despite America's difficult history in the region, nations in Beijing's backyard are welcoming the greater engagement ? and the promise of billions of dollars more in American investment. The change has been sudden, with some longtime U.S. foes now seeking a relationship that could serve at least as a counterweight to China's regional hegemony.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, has made significant strides toward reform and democracy after decades as an international pariah, when it was universally scorned for its atrocious labor rights record and its long repression of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's pro-democracy movement. The Obama administration is expected to ease investment restrictions in the country this week.

Vietnam, threatened by Beijing's claims to the resource-rich South China Sea, has dramatically deepened diplomatic and commercial ties with the United States, with their two-country trade now exceeding $22 billion a year ? from nothing two decades ago. Clinton on Tuesday made her third trip to the fast-growing country, meeting with senior communist officials to prod them into greater respect for free expression and labor rights.

Landlocked and impoverished Laos offers fewer resources than its far larger neighbors and has lagged in Asia's economic boom. It remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, even as it hopes to kick-start its development with accession soon to the World Trade Organization.

In recent years, China has stepped up as Laos' principal source of assistance, with loans and grants of up to $350 million over the last two decades. But like many others in its region, Laos' government is wary of Beijing's intentions. And it has kept an envious eye on neighboring Vietnam's 40 percent surge in commercial trade with the United States over the last two years, as well as the sudden rapprochement between the U.S. and nearby Myanmar.

Persistent human rights issues stand in the way of closer relations with Washington. The U.S. remains concerned about the plight of the ethnic Hmong minority, most of whom fled the country after fighting for a U.S.-backed guerilla army during the Vietnam War. Nearly 250,000 resettled in the United States. The U.S. has pressed Laos to respect the rights of returnees from neighboring countries.

Washington also has been seeking greater cooperation from Laos on the search for U.S. soldiers missing in action since the Vietnam War. More than 300 Americans remain unaccounted for in Laos.

And it is pressing the government to hold off on a proposed $3.5 billion dam project across the Mekong River. The dam would be the first across the river's mainstream and has sparked a barrage of opposition from neighboring countries and environmental groups, which warn that tens of millions of livelihoods could be at stake.

The project is currently on hold and Washington hopes to stall it further with the promise of funds for new environmental studies.
