The Power of Story #8 - Connecticut Foster Care & Adoption

Posted on: April 10th, 2012

Imagine you are 8 years old. You are removed from school by someone you don?t know because you accidentally told someone that your mom hit you that morning in the head with an iron. You don?t even get to go home and get your clothes or teddy bear. You have nothing when you arrive at the foster house. You don?t know what is going on and what is going to happen. You are scared: more scared in some ways then when you are beat at home. Though your parents had a past of physical abuse, neglect, substance abuse, and mental health issues, they were still your parents AND you had a 1 year old baby sister. It was always your job to take care of her and now she was being taken care of by someone else. You freak out. You can?t emotionally or physically cope with all you are experiencing. While your parents don?t get their act together, you find yourself violent and doing things you never thought you?d do. You even find yourself in the hospital because you can?t function with PTSD. Thankfully?.so thankfully, a foster family didn?t give up on you. They almost did?it seemed like at times they might and you would understand why they would, but they didn?t. Now you are 16 years old and you have come a LONG WAY. You don?t show any violence. Your biggest struggle now is school because you had been through so many different schooling situations and how do you do homework when your mind is so messed up that you have to go to the hospital? But your foster parents are still sticking by you and advocating for you and helping you. You just might make it.
This story describes a child currently in the Connecticut Foster Care System.
