Sports? long Russian winter is finally over: Football is part of the conversation again. Looking for an early dose? Check out Oxnard, where the Dallas Cowboys open camp Sunday. Yes, hoss, Sunday. Baseball is great and we can?t get enough of that WNBA, of course, but life begins again with football season.

Camp runs through Aug. 16, with occasional breaks for exhibition games. Practices are free, and parking is $10, making it one of the few bargains left in professional sports. The workouts take place at the River Ridge Playing Fields, 2101 W. Vineyard Ave., in Oxnard.

Oxnard is just a 60-mile drive from Los Angeles. Amtrak offers regularly scheduled Pacific Surfliner trains to Oxnard?s Transportation Center.

The training/practice sessions are held in the afternoons, usually at 4 p.m., but dates and times vary, so be sure to check for updates at www.dallascowboys.com.

Among the events:

  • Dallas Cowboys ?Fan Fest? ? Sunday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Military Appreciation Day ? Aug. 6 and 13
  • ?First Responders Day, Aug. 12
  • ?Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick for kids, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m.

Oxnard hotels are getting in on the action as well. Visitors staying in an Oxnard hotel will receive one complimentary parking pass to training camp for each day of their stay. The Residence Inn by Marriott, next to camp, is the host hotel. A list of other hotels can be found at www.visitoxnard.com.
