COLUMBIA, Mo. -- University of Missouri researchers have developed new software using smartphones' GPS and imaging abilities, that determine the exact location of distant objects as well as monitor the speed and direction of moving objects. The software could eventually allow smartphone-armed soldiers to target the location of their enemies. On the home front, the software could be used by everyone, including golfers judging distance to the green and biologists documenting the location of a rare animal without disturbing it.

"The great advantage of a smartphone is that it provides so many tools in a single, readily available, relatively inexpensive package," said Qia Wang, a doctoral student in MU's College of Engineering who led the development of the software. "For example, on the battlefield, a soldier needs a rangefinder, compass, GPS and other tools to do reconnaissance before calling in an air strike. With our software, the soldier can have all those instruments in one device that can be purchased off the shelf. When that soldier returns from war, she can use the same software to protect her family by clocking a speeder near her children's school and catching the culprit on video."

Wang and his colleagues developed their software to locate and track:

  1. Targets of known size When the size of the target is known, a single image is enough to pinpoint the target's location. The software computes the latitude and longitude of the target using the smartphones' GPS location, compass reading and the distance to the target based on the relative size of the target in the image compared to its known real-life size.
  2. Targets of unknown size If the exact size of a target is unknown, the software uses two images to triangulate the location of the target.
  3. Moving targets By taking a short video of a moving target, the smartphone software can calculate how fast the target is moving and in what direction it is going.

"Currently, our software is limited by the physical abilities of smartphone hardware, but the devices are improving rapidly," Wang said. "We anticipate that improvements in GPS accuracy, battery life and camera resolution will allow our software to make even more accurate observations. We also are making our software more user-friendly."

The targeting and tracking software is not available commercially yet. A prototype version has been created and is currently being tested. More algorithms and methods are being developed to improve the speed and accuracy. Details on the programming and functionality of the software were presented by Wang and his colleagues at the Geospatial InfoFusion II conference and published in the Proceedings of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Apple patent would disable phone based on location

3 hrs.

Among a bevy of patents awarded to Apple this week was one that would enable or disable certain features of a phone depending on its location. It could be useful, but it also raises serious questions about who really owns your device.

The patent, "Apparatus and methods for enforcement of policies upon a wireless device," was pointed out by Apple Insider?Thursday. It's similar to an application made public in 2011 that would use a sensor in the phone to detect whether it was allowed to take pictures or make calls. The new patent relies on GPS, cell tower?or Wi-Fi?data to determine location, and then "changing one or more functional or operational aspects" of the device.

The suggestions for use are innocuous and practical: a movie theater that automatically sets phones to silent; a classroom that prevents outgoing calls; turning off Wi-Fi in a hospital. But it's not hard to imagine abuses of the system as well: it could be a useful tool for any oppressive regime, for instance,?or be used to force the shutdown of phones at a protest?? something that happened last year in San Francisco.

There's nothing in the patent that indicates it is going to be implemented, though iPhones and other smartphones do already have the ability to adjust things like ring volume and Wi-Fi settings depending on location. The difference this patent describes would be that it's not the user making the changes, but whoever sets "policies" in the area.

You can read?the patent in its entirety at the Patent Office's website. Apple was also awarded numerous other patents this week, from mobile payment systems to email interfaces, thought only a few are actually in use.

2012 Purdue Football Week 1: Eastern Kentucky Colonels Preview

Caleb TerBush will start his 14th straight game at Purdue. The last QB to start at least 14 games in a row was Curtis Painter. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

In approximately 48 hours we'll be in Ross-Ade Stadium watching the premier of the 125th edition of Purdue Football. A lot can be draw from this first game. We're playing a team that is ranked No. 18 in the FCS poll. We're not the only Big Ten team to go against a ranked FCS opponent. No. 23 Indiana State is at Indiana and No. 9 Northern Iowa is at Wisconsin. Those are all three FCS games involving Big Ten teams this week.

Still, they are games against FCS teams. It bears repeating that there is never and excuse for a Big Ten team to lose to an FCS team. The advantages in conditioning, recruiting, talent, scholarships, etc are staggering. It still happens, however. Indiana, Northwestern, and Michigan have been recent victims. Iowa and Wisconsin have had narrow escapes, while Minnesota has lost three of its last five against FCS teams with a narrow escape in 2009.

Purdue has not had to fear much against the lower division though. The Boilers are 7-0 all-time against the 1-AA/FCS since its establishment. Our all-time mark is as follows:

2011 vs. Southeast Missouri State W 59-0

2010 vs. Western Illinois W 31-21

2008 vs. Northern Colorado W 42-10

2007 vs. Eastern Illinois W 52-6

2006 vs. Indiana State W 60-35

2002 vs. Illinois State W 51-10

1990 vs. Indiana State W 41-13

Star-divide

Despite the struggles of many in the Big Ten and the fact that we haven't exactly been world beaters Purdue has still taken care of its business against the FCS. Our closest margin of victory was two years ago in the game where Keith Smith got injured. Even in an ugly game Purdue led 31-14 before a touchdown with 1:22 left made the score cosmetically closer. That WIU team would go on to qualify for the FCS playoffs.

They should be similar to the Eastern Kentucky team we will see on Saturday. They are the favorites to win the Ohio Valley Conference and return to the playoffs. They have 21 conference titles and a pair of National Championships, making them the best FCS team we have ever faced.

Eastern Kentucky has a bit of a history in scaring FBS teams. In 2009 they let Indiana off the hook late, falling 19-13 in Bloomington. That was a 4-8 Indiana team, however. Last year they traveled to Manhattan, Kansas and lost a tight 10-7 contest on a late KSU touchdown. Kansas State later spent time in the top 15 and finished at 10-3 overall, nearly upsetting Oklahoma State to steal the Big 12. That has the danger light flashing for Saturday.

Eastern Kentucky Offense Vs. The Purdue Defense

The Colonels feature one of the top running backs at the FCS level in Walter Payton Award (The FCS Heisman) nominee Matt Denham. In only 12 games last season he rushed for 1,592 yards and nine touchdowns. The 5'10" 185 pound senior running back is one of the best that the lower division has to offer and could easily play on many FBS teams. He averaged 130.8 yards per game and will be the focal point of the offense. At 254 total carries he had 21 carries per game.

The experience in the backfield is also there with quarterback T.J. Pryor, who will likely set every EKU passing record imaginable before the season is over. Pryor is mobile with 180 yards rushing and a touchdown last season. He finished with 1,605 yards passing and 18 touchdowns against only eight interceptions, so he does not make many mistakes.

It will be up to the defensive line and linebackers, especially new starter Antwon Higgs, to prevent Denham from moving the chains. If Denham gets his yards he will open up things in the passing game for Pryor, who is calm and efficient enough to not force anything. Nnamdi Ezenwa and Will Lucas will need to be key on the ends while Bruce Gaston and Kawann Short must hold down the middle. EKU wants to get Denham his yards, so making them throw is paramount.

Ricardo Allen and Josh Johnson should be able to cover their receivers, but 6'4" 192 pound receiver Tyrone Goard is a size mismatch they must accommodate for. Goard led the Colonels with 627 yards receiving on 39 catches and 11 TDs. He is a big play threat. Cameron Bailey (29-370-1) is also a solid possession receiver capable of moving the chains.

Overall this is a talented offense with playmakers that have a ton of experience. We have the talent edge, but it is not as dramatic as one might think. It is our depth, especially along the defensive line and in the secondary, that we must use to wear them down. Goard is a first down waiting to happen on third and long, so, as I always say, cover the middle of the field.

UPDATE: EKU suffered a huge blow this afternoon, losing starting center O.J. Enabosi to academics:

Senior center O.J. Enabosi and sophomore wide receiver Jaucady Rutledge have been ruled academically ineligible and will not play this season. Justin Williams, (14-193-1) a junior wide receiver, has also had some academic problems and even though he still remains eligible to play he has slipped down the depth chart and may not see action against Purdue.

Eastern Kentucky Defense Vs. The Purdue Offense

I am not sure what we are going to get offensively other than solid running from Akem Hunt and Akeem Shavers. The offensive line is relatively new and has been injury plagued. We have a quarterback rotation (which almost never works out) to be concerned with, and our receivers outside of the top three are untested. It will be a good game to get experience if everything works. If it does not and the offense becomes stalled EKU has the offensive talent to put the pressure on us with a few scores.

Justin Bell (51 tackles, 2 interceptions) and Brooklyn Fox (80 tackles, three interceptions) are talented defensive backs. Linebacker Kevin Hamlin (71 tackles, 4 INTs) is a quality linebacker if not a bit undersized. He's got solid coverage skills as seen by the four picks that he also returned for a total of 120 yards. The defense was the Ohio Valley's best last season.

Shawn Shupperd (41 tackles, 4.5 sacks) leads the pass rush with Robert Knowles (33 tackles, 4 sacks). Ideally, Kevin Pamphile and Trevor Foy serve well on the ends and keep both Robert Marve and Caleb TerBush clean. Shupperd will be a familiar face for receiver Charles Torwudzo, as they were HS teammates.

Again, depth has to be key here. There will be rotations with the likes of Justin Kitchens and Devin Smith likely seeing time on the line. We have to establish ourselves early, but my biggest fear is that the juggling of quarterbacks leads to the disjointed offense that plagued us last season.

Special Teams vs. Special Teams

We have a bit of a double-edged weapon here in Raheem Mostert. If EKU can't kick to the end zone he is a threat to break one for a score, but except for one time per game he only returns kicks AFTER we've given up points.

Luke Pray has experience as their kicker with 10 made field goals, but was just 10 of 20. We have a question mark with Sam McCartney and Paul Griggs likely both playing. Jordan Berry and Cody Webster are even as punters.

Weather

Since we're the team that passes more the 40% chance of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Isaac on Saturday favors EKU. It is easier to run the ball in poor weather than throw, and our last poor weather game (2010 vs. Michigan) was hardly an offensive showcase, especially against an epically awful defense for the Wolverines.

Game Outlook

Eastern Kentucky has enough talent and experience that we should have some concern of an upset if we are not totally sharp. Usually these upsets do not happen because the FCS team is light years better than the FBS team. They happen because the FBS team lets them hang around and stay close until the fourth quarter. By then, the FCS team has a world of confidence and is playing with nothing to lose. The FBS team then has the added pressure of not wanting to screw up and be embarrassed by losing.

It really is as simple as coming out and dominating early so an upset isn't possible. That is what Purdue has done in every FCS game in its history. The two that were even remotely close were the Western Illinois game in which Purdue won an ugly contest because it had more talent and the Indiana State game that was really much closer than it should have been. Even then, I felt like Purdue could score whenever it wanted to.

As usual, the prediction will come tomorrow in the Big Ten wrap.

Rest easy and prepare for Notre Dame if:

  • Akeem Shavers and/or Akeem Hunt rushes for 100 yards.
  • Robert Marve and Caleb TerBush throw no interceptions.
  • Ricardo Allen gets a pick.
  • Raheem Mostert returns the opening kick for a score.

Drink heavily in preparation for Notre Dame if:

  • Matt Denham rushes for five yards with impunity.
  • Tyrone Goard wanders freely in the open field on third and long.
  • Marve/TerBush throw a few interceptions
  • Purdue gets off to a slow start offensively

Finally, Tom Schott, Purdue's Sports Information Director, asked me to share the following information for the weekend:

The first Boiler Bridge Walk of the 2012 Purdue football season is set for Friday. It will be followed by the inaugural pep rally.

Every Friday before home games, members of the Purdue football team meet and greet their fellow citizens of Lafayette and West Lafayette as they walk across the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge.

Fans of all ages are invited to join Purdue Pete, the spirit squad, Boilermaker Special and community leaders. The 2011 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl championship trophy will be on site for photo opportunities.

The team is dropped off near the Sonya L. Margerum Fountain on the West Lafayette side of the bridge and walk across to Riehle Plaza. Team members hand out giveaway items each week.

This week's sponsors are Bruno's, which supplied the team picture cards that the players will give out, and Kathy's Kandies, which will be serving up black and gold popcorn.

The Boiler Bridge Walk gets under way when the team arrives around 5:40 p.m., but fans should arrive early to get a good spot on the Myers Bridge.

The pep rally will start at 7 p.m. at the Class of 1980 courtyard between the Purdue Memorial Union and Stewart Center and run approximately 45 minutes. Purdue Pete, the spirit squad and pep band will be on hard, as well as the Goldusters. Two Purdue players will address the crowd.

Pappy's Sweet Shop will give Purdue students free grilled chicken sandwiches, chips and a beverage (while supplies last), and the first 150 students who show their VIP card or game ticket for Saturday's football game against Eastern Kentucky will receive a t-shirt and Pappy's ice cream.

Boilermaker fans are encouraged to fly a Purdue flag through Saturday's 2012 season-opening football game against Eastern Kentucky and then on the Friday and Saturday of every home-game weekend.

As part of Purdue SpiritMakers, fans are encouraged to decorate homes or businesses to show their university spirit.

"What better way to display support than with Purdue flags flying all over campus, all over the community, at all Boilermaker farms, all over the state, and for that matter, the nation and the world," athletics director Morgan Burke said. "Boilermaker Flag Revelry will annually remind us of how our great community and our great university embrace 40,000 young people to help them as they grow and learn so they can impact and lead our future. It also will signal the return of a great American tradition - college football, which allows 60,000-plus fans to come together as family to enjoy a daylong experience focused on family and some fun."

Fall of Maldives president not a 'coup': panel

A Commonwealth-backed investigation in the Maldives on Thursday dismissed claims that a coup forced Mohamed Nasheed from the presidency in February and declared it was a legitimate transfer of power.

The panel's report concluded that Nasheed, who alleged he was ousted in a coup, had resigned voluntarily -- a judgment promptly rejected by his party which staged another street protest and clashed with police.

The Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI), consisting of four nationals named by political parties and a Singaporean judge nominated by the Commonwealth, found the change of president was "legal and constitutional".

"The resignation of President Nasheed was voluntary and of his own free will," it said in a 62-page report which was also signed by a Canadian and New Zealander who functioned as observers for the UN and the Commonwealth.

Nasheed's departure "was not caused by any illegal coercion or intimidation," the report said.

Nasheed has previously told his supporters that it would be legitimate to challenge the current government through "street action" if the report rejected his claims that he was overthrown in a military and police coup.

Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activists took to the streets Thursday night in a repeat of protests that have gripped the capital Male for the past six months.

Police Superintendent Abdulla Nawaz said they arrested at least 23 activists. "They have assaulted one of our officers and damaged the windows of a police vehicle," Nawaz said when contacted by telephone.

MDP activists said about 50 of their supporters had been arrested within a two-hour period and accused police of clamping down on their nightly street demonstration.

"We will keep up our campaign to press for early elections," MDP spokesman Hamid Abdul Ghafoor told AFP by telephone. He rejected the CoNI report as a "total outrage".

However, both the Commonwealth and the United States welcomed the report.

"We urge all parties to respect those findings, to exercise restraint, obey the rule of law, and continue to express themselves in a peaceful and non-violent manner," the US state department said in a statement.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma said that "the task ahead for all Maldivians must be to strengthen democracy".

"An atmosphere of peace and public order is essential for that to happen," he said.

Nasheed's nominee on the CoNI panel resigned late on Wednesday saying that it had ignored vital evidence, including photographs and videos.

The Maldives -- a string of islands set in the Indian Ocean -- relies on luxury resorts that attract wealthy tourists from around the world to its palm-fringed beaches, pristine seas and renowned diving.

This year's upheavals have not directly affected the resorts but have damaged the nation's image as a tropical paradise.

The CoNI report also noted acts of "police brutality" over the three days in February when Nasheed left office, and it called for further inquiries.

President Mohamed Waheed, who took over from Nasheed and was formerly his deputy, had earlier announced he would back its verdict.

One of his ministers, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, said Thursday that the government respected the panel's work and added that police would ensure that no civil unrest erupted at any demonstration by opposition activists.

Shareef said several unnamed countries had cut off aid to the Maldives and shunned high-level contacts over Nasheed's coup claims.

"The CoNI process is the catalyst for further engagement with the international community," Shareef, who is visiting Sri Lanka, told reporters.

President Waheed has rejected international calls for early elections, saying it was not practical to hold a vote before July 2013 in the Islamic state of 330,000 Sunni Muslims.

Job Centre Plus ? Running a Business from Home

It is only through lack of imagination that a person will find it difficult to find a suitable business from home. The abundance of imagination of a vast majority of individuals is clearly depicted in the number and variety of businesses that are now being carried out successfully from home. To name a medley of business opportunities will include home-based coffee stall, provisions mini-markets, photocopying, barber services and academic tuition centers. All these business undertakings can be run with minimum capital and comfortably operated from home.

One of the types of running a business from home that is yet to catch the imagination of home-based operators is to set up a for adults only coffee stall and snacks centre catering for the needs of special adults only. This requires little space; the front porch of a house can be conveniently converted and designed for the purpose. You need a couple of exclusive tables and comfortable chairs for clients. The main attraction will be foods and drinks that will boost the manly energies of clients.

For this you will require a special coffee premixed with aphrodisiac powder that will turn the person on in the space of half an hour after drinking. Should this effect be experienced after the first drink, you can be sure that the client will be back faster than you can imagine and when words spread around about your specialty, you can expect clients lining up waiting to be serviced in a row. Apart from doing a service to yourself and making good money, you will also be doing a service to adult males who have lost touch with the realities of married sex life. This is a great niche you can undertake when thinking of running a business from home. Gratitude will be experienced all around.

The only thing that may hold you back will be to gain approval from your own family as this business touches on the sensitive issue of sex. Do not let this negative yellow thinking prevent you from proceeding with this plan. Pretense will not take anybody anywhere beneficial. Discuss it openly with your family and drop all the pretenses and you will have yourself a good if not excellent business opportunity.

With your aphrodisiac coffee drinks as an opener, you can graduate into other food items such as fast foods like beef burgers, fried spaghetti, roasted or fried chicken (home made), and as most people smoke cigarettes, you can include cigarettes too. Why not?

To be successful in the long run running a business form home, you must always remember that you must maintain the quality of your product. Any drop in quality will slowly diminish the number of your clients accordingly. Pay careful attention to this aspect. Maintain excellent services and also attempt to upgrade the quality of your products as well as your customer relations and customer services. This may sound trivial to amateurs but believe me, there is nothing that will drive customers away from your stall faster than bad customer relations and bad customer services. Try as far as possible to attend to your customers personally because assistants would not care a dime about customer services as long as they are paid wages. So there is no alternative but for you to do it yourself. Maybe your family can help you in this.

US economy grew at 1.7 percent rate in 2nd quarter

(AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, boosted by slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that growth was marginally better than its initial estimate of 1.5 percent.

Economists expect some improvement in growth in the second half of the year after seeing more positive data in July. But most believe the economy will keep growing at a subpar rate of around 2 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent is not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.3 percent in July. Most expect the unemployment rate to stay above 8 percent for the rest of this year.

A weak economy and high unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama re-election chances and bolster Republican candidate Mitt Romney's campaign.

The report on economic growth measures the gross domestic output, the country's total output of goods and services. It measures everything from the purchase of restaurant meals to construction of highways and bridges. The report Wednesday was the government's second look at GDP for the spring quarter. There will be a third and final estimate of second quarter GDP released next month.

The third quarter began with some promise.

Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Also in July, consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.

The upward revision to second-quarter growth was largely because consumers spent at a slightly faster pace than first estimated. Consumer spending grew a 1.7 percent rate, better than the 1.5 percent initial estimated. Exports, which add to growth, were also stronger, growing at a 6 percent rate.

Government spending, which has been a drag on growth for the past two years, contracted again in the second quarter. But the decline at an annual rate of 0.9 percent was less than the initial estimated drop of 1.4 percent. That reflected a much smaller dip in defense spending than first estimated.

All of the changes boosted economic output by $6.5 billion more than previously estimated, leaving total GDP at $13.56 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in the second quarter.

Renting Social, A Trend Not To Be So Dog Friendly | Steve Dale's ...

Renting Social, A Trend Not To Be So Dog Friendly

Dogs are a great reason for starting a conversation -- even in a big city like Chicago. My wife and I were walking our two dogs when and we happened upon a Soft Coated Wheaten terrier. At the other end of the leash, the dog's owners explained that they had just relocated from St. Louis, but nearly didn't move.

Perhaps they had second thoughts about the Windy City's famous winter weather. Or was it because the Chicago Cubs don't show as much promise for a World Series as their hometown Cardinals?

None of the above.

"We nearly couldn't find an apartment that allowed our dog, and we weren't going to consider relocating without him." They finally found a place after two visits to Chicago, pounding the pavement with an apartment-hunting service.

The owners might have saved time and gas money if they'd simply checked out Rental Social, a social network site for people interested in apartment living, and for those who currently reside in apartments. Renters from around the country talk to one another here, and one common topic is finding dog-friendly digs.

It turns out that an increasing number of landlords and management companies mandate random weight limits, so any dog over 12, 15, 20 pounds, or whatever the limit, is not welcome.

This reasoning is seriously flawed. The intimidating deep bark of a large dog is an effective deterrent to anyone who doesn't belong. In truth, it's those vertically impaired dogs with a Napoleon complex who are likely to be the most yappy.

Landlords have even told me, "It's for their own good. Big dogs deserve a big house and yard to run; they don't belong in apartments." In fact, the average Greyhound, Great Dane, or Newfoundland requires far less exercise than a little terrier. Let any dog out in a yard, and after a good sniff around, it's time for a nap. If not snoozing, bored dogs (of any size) may begin to bark in the yard, or jump over or dig under a fence.

I argue that apartment dwellers are more likely to take their pups for leash walks than dog owners living in houses. Walks offer dogs far more exercise than simply popping through a doggy door into the yard. And a walk is far more enriching, giving dogs a chance to sniff out the neighborhood news. In general, dogs walked regularly on-leash are more social because they grow up being social. Also, so many people complain about not knowing their neighbors, but you never hear that where there are dogs. Dogs are a social lubricant.

For most people, even looking at a dog prompts a smile. Dogs spread a little happiness. Each time we smile, endorphins in our heads do a little happy dance. That's a healthy thing.

Here are more questions/comments I often hear about dogs in apartments or condos, and my responses:

-People have allergies.

SD: Dander doesn't fly off dogs and attack people, so unless you're in an enclosed place where the dog has been for a considerable period of time, there's no issue. If you don't want to sneeze, don't pet the dog or visit the dog owner's apartment.

--Not all dogs are friendly.

SD: Most dogs, particularly those socialized in big cities, are friendly, but I'm not opposed to levying a "friendly dog deposit" until a pet has passed the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen's (CGC) Test, a basic obedience and temperament test offered by dog trainers around the country. Of course, it's only right to return the deposit when the pup passes.

--What about people who are afraid of dogs? They have rights, too.

SD: I agree that all dogs much be kept on-leash and in the owners' control at all times. In elevator buildings, people fearful of dogs can wait for another elevator.

--What about those irresponsible owners who allow dogs off-leash or don't pick up after them?

SD: What does the apartment management or condo association currently do about people who toss trash in common areas, or disobey other building rules? All apartments and condos already have policies in place; it's a matter of enforcement. In fact, overall, landlords suggest complaints about rowdy children and loud music are far more common than grievances about dogs.

Lexmark to cut 1,700 jobs, stop making inkjets

(AP) ? Lexmark is cutting 1,700 jobs, or almost 13 percent of its workforce, and says it will stop making inkjet printers as part of a drive to cut costs as it deals with shrinking sales of inkjets.

The printer and software company said Tuesday that it will close its inkjet supply plant in the Philippines by the end of 2015. It is also putting its inkjet technology up for sale.

Shares jumped $3.11, or 16 percent, to $22.12 in late morning trading. They had lost 43 percent of their value this year.

Lexmark had about 13,300 employees as of Dec. 31. Lexmark has been shifting its focus from consumer inkjet printers, focusing on higher-profit laser printers and supplies for businesses and software services.

It has made a series of acquisitions, including Luxembourg's BDGB Enterprise for about $148 million. This purchase included BDGB's U.S. subsidiary Brainware Inc., which provides data capture software to businesses.

The job cuts include about 1,100 manufacturing jobs. Lexmark says the moves will save it $85 million in 2013 and $95 million a year by 2015. It expects to book costs of $160 million over three years for the restructuring.

Lexmark International Inc., based in Lexington, Ky., says it will continue to provide support and supplies for its inkjet printers still in use.

The restructuring is the second in less than a year for Lexmark, which said in January it would cut 625 jobs.

Lexmark in July reported second-quarter results that fell short of Wall Street expectations as the economic crisis in Europe pulled down demand.

Does NASA's Curiosity Rover Have the Smarts to Find Life on Mars?

NASA's now on-duty Mars rover, Curiosity, is on the hunt to judge whether the Red Planet ever had an environment capable of supporting microbial life.

The rover's above-the-wheels intellect is designed to mull over the question of Mars' habitability. However, Curiosity will likely stop short of solving the ultimate question: Has there ever been life on Mars?

The $2.5 billion robotic explorer, the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, landed on the Red Planet Aug. 5 (PDT), beginning a two-year trek around Mars' Gale Crater. In determining whether Mars is or ever was habitable to life, Curiosity should give scientists a major boost toward understanding whether life has ever existed there, and where to look for it in the future.

It's not a new inquiry, but a question that has dogged the "search for life" community for decades.

Turning point

"In my opinion the turning point in the search for life on Mars would be if Curiosity finds organics," said Alfonso Davila, senior research scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. He is a principal investigator at the Carl Sagan Center for the Search of Life in the Universe. [Photos from Curiosity's First Drive on Mars]

Davila told SPACE.com that if or when Curiosity establishes that it has the capability to detect organics near the surface, "then the focus should turn to understanding the nature and the origin of those organics, and to establish whether they are linked to life."

While Curiosity might provide some clues, Davila said scientists would likely need to send a new set of instruments specifically selected to find "biomarkers." A biomarker can be any kind of molecule indicating the existence, past or present, of living organisms.

"One option would be to go back to Gale Crater, although my guess is that whatever organics might be there are very ancient and degraded, or non-biogenic ? for example, delivered by meteorites," Davila said.

Another choice would be to send those instruments to a site where organics should be better preserved and for longer periods of time, Davila added, "such as the ground ice at higher latitudes. We know that similar ground ice on Earth preserves organics and even whole cells for millions of years."

If Curiosity does not find organics, Davila said: "This would strongly suggest that neither the dry soils nor the ancient sediments are good places to preserve organics. We still would have the alternative of searching for them in the ground ice, and perhaps in other substrates such as surface evaporates."

Better method

Some scientists don't doubt whether Curiosity is up for the job.

"Curiosity has the ability to detect organic compounds," said Carol Stoker, a staff planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center.

Similar instruments were also carried on previous NASA Mars landers, the Viking and Phoenix spacecraft. "These missions failed to detect organics, setting lower limits on the presence of organics at very low values," Stoker said.

However, a recent re-analysis of the Viking results, led by Rafael Navarro-Gonz?lez of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico City, suggest that the best explanation is that the Martian soil contains a few parts per million of organics that were oxidized to carbon dioxide during Viking's first stage of the organic analysis procedure.[The Life on Mars Search: Photo Timeline]

Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) Suite Investigation is using a better method, "so it may discover organics on Mars that Viking and Phoenix missed," Stoker said.

However, that would not constitute proof of life ? modern or ancient ? because meteorites carry organics to Mars, Stoker added. "Detection of organic compounds has limited relevance to detection of modern life. Curiosity's instrumentation and the choice of landing sites for MSL were optimized for exploring ancient habitable environments, not modern ones," she said.

Stoker said that even if there is modern life on Mars, it can grow only where liquid water is available. Therefore, since Gale Crater has no evidence of modern water or ice, life can't grow there, she noted.

"Furthermore, Curiosity's instrumentation is geared towards characterizing rocks and minerals. Different choices of landing sites and instrumentation are needed to look for evidence of modern life," Stoker said.

Viking redux

The prospect that the Curiosity rover might detect organics has been appraised by one former Viking experimenter who worked on the Pyrolytic Release experiment ? one of the three life-detection tests conducted on the twin lander missions in 1976.

Jerry Hubbard, a retired professor of biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, carried out pre- and post-Viking simulations, leading to his forecast for Curiosity's analysis of soil organics based on Viking biology findings.

"I predicted that Curiosity may detect simple organic compounds," Hubbard told SPACE.com. The tests support a prediction that photocatalytically synthesized organics in Mars soil will be found by Curiosity's sensitive instruments, he said.

Perhaps the greatest surprise of the decades-ago Viking Mission, Hubbard said, was the failure of its Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer to find indigenous organics in the soils tested. However, the results of the Viking Pyrolytic Release experiment and the supporting science provide a clue as to what Curiosity may well find.?

Curiosity's "wet chemistry" capabilities, its sensitive gas chromatograph, a Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer and the rover's Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument package provide new opportunities, Hubbard said, to not only dig into the habitability of Mars issue, but also to decide whether the negative findings of the Viking GCMS could be called to question.

Misinterpreting results

"One of the NASA 2012 strategic objectives is 'to determine if there is or ever has been life elsewhere in the universe,' so of course NASA is interested in detecting life on Mars," said Cassie Conley, NASA's planetary protection officer.

However, the problem of life detection is a hard one, and not really tractable with in-situ instruments, Conley said. "That's one thing we definitely learned from Viking."

Conley said that science works by doing follow-on experiments to answer questions raised by early results, and no mission could carry every instrument needed to make a really definitive conclusion.?

"MSL is designed as a very capable geochemistry mission, with the objective of understanding surface conditions on Mars ? at Gale Crater. The strategy of identifying 'habitable environments' that's used on this mission is a good way to avoid misinterpreting results that will be obtained," Conley told SPACE.com.

Complication

Returning Mars samples to Earth would allow for much more comprehensive science, Conley said. "Until this past February, we were planning a set of missions with the European Space Agency to do exactly that. Unfortunately, budgetary constraints and programmatic priorities resulted in the cancellation of plans for that set of missions."

And there's an additional complication to locating life on the Red Planet.

"It's easy to find life on Mars?just bring it with you! The hard part is making sure you could distinguish Mars life, if it's there," from microbes accidentally brought there aboard Earth-made spacecraft, Conley said. There were a number of steps taken on the Viking program, she said, to ensure that Earth life would not contaminate the instruments carried as "life detection" packages.

"Ensuring the proper precautions are taken to minimize the potential for such mistakes is one of the responsibilities of my job," Conley said.

Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is a winner of last year's National Space Club Press Award and a past editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines. He has written for SPACE.com since 1999.

Deregulation has affected Northwest Communications Cooperative in several ways. It has provided an opportunity to provide deregulated services(outside of our regulated telecommunications core services), such as cable TV video services, wireless broadband(internet) services, cellular services, security systems installation and wiring of new businesses and residences. It also has brought us challenges in the competition to our services including cell phones, satellite TV, satellite internet services and installation of networks/phone systems.

What is the biggest challenge?in your industry?
Right now the greatest challenge is looking to the future and accessing enough capital to complete our fiber to the premise facilities without harming the future viability of our Cooperative. The FCC is in the process daily of attacking the cost reimbursement formula to allow us to invest in the network of the future. The Bakken oil field activity creates additional strain on our resources and employee staffing.

How has deregulation affected?your company?
Twenty years ago deregulation was a big issue for the telecommunications industry in that it allowed multiple providers to enter the local service and long distance market. Deregulation provided equal opportunities for both SRT and our competitors. Not only was it a benefit to the consumer, but SRT has done well in a competitive market. The biggest service challenge today is keeping up with the construction activity taking place in the Minot region due to the oil activity and last year?s catastrophic flooding.

What?s the next wave in telecommunications?
Today the focus is on broadband and mobility, which are the two biggest growth areas for SRT. As the largest telecommunications cooperative in North Dakota, we provide voice and broadband internet services on wireline and wireless networks. SRT?s core service offerings include broadband data and internet, wireless phones, traditional telecommunications, security systems, business services and television (in select areas).

How has deregulation affected?your company?
Deregulation has led to a wave of innovation in telecommunications. Today we operate in an IP world which has brought about the convergence of voice, video, security?and data in a multitude of applications. The bottom line is the new services have made a significant impact in improving the quality of life to our members in such areas as rural healthcare, education, entertainment, smart grid/smart farms and a multitude of other services.

What is the biggest challenge?in your industry?
In the industry, as it relates to rural telecommunications providers, our biggest challenge is how can we invest and maintain our infrastructure in a regulatory environment at the federal level that does not understand or relate to rural America. ?Our traditional funding sources that were predictable and certain are now very unpredictable and uncertain ? potentially resulting in a reduction in the investment of infrastructure for many companies serving rural communities throughout our nation.
