Fight over ?bias? in political polling as numbers show clear edge for Obama (+video)

Most polls give President Obama the lead over Mitt Romney ? some by a margin many find startling. Conservatives say that just proves the polls are rigged to give?Democrats the advantage.

As Mitt Romney and Barack Obama prepare to go mano a mano (rhetorically, at least) in their first debate this week, the fight over skewed polling continues to echo among partisans and pundits.

Most polls give Mr. Obama the lead ? some by a margin many find startling. The latest Rand Corp. snapshot has Obama up by 7 points, Gallup?s by 6 points. The RealClearPolitics average of polls gives Obama a 4.3 percent edge over M. Romney.

But some conservative commentators say that just proves the polls are rigged to give?Democrats?an apparent advantage. And the mainstream media, they charge, is buying into what amounts to a conspiracy by playing up such survey results.

Why do Election 2012 swing states matter? 5 resources to explain.

?A tight presidential contest is fueling a fierce debate over whether the daily stream of polls accurately reflects the dynamics of the presidential race,? blogs Neil King Jr. for the Wall Street Journal.

Michael Barone, senior political analyst for the Washington Examiner (who calls himself a ?recovering pollster?) points out the increasing difficulty in accurately gauging that dynamic.

There?s always a margin of error of 3-4 points, he notes, and the results in one out of 20 polls will be wrong outside the margin of error.

Then there?s the difficulty in getting potential voters to agree to be interviewed by phone (polls used to be conducted face-to-face), especially since many people now use cell phones only. Federal law requires cell phones to be hand-dialed rather than dialed by computers as land lines are.

?In addition, it's getting much harder for pollsters to get people to respond to interviews,? Mr. Barone writes. ?The Pew Research Center reports that it's getting only 9 percent of the people it contacts to respond to its questions. That's compared with 36 percent in 1997.?

?Are those 9 percent representative of the larger population?? Barone asks. ?As that percentage declines, it seems increasingly possible that the sample is unrepresentative of the much larger voting public. One thing a poll can't tell us is the opinion of people who refuse to be polled.?

Why is Barack Obama's signature on Mars? (+video)

Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI camera.

Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) camera: here we see a plaque affixed to its surface bearing the names and signatures of U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Office of Science and Technology Director John Holdren, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and other key figures responsible for making the Mars Exploration Program possible.

It is one of several images the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) has taken during the check out of its robotic arm.

You never know? even on another planet it can?t hurt to have friends in high places!
?
The image was captured by MAHLI on September 19, the 44th sol of the MSL mission. (See the original raw downlink?here.)

The rectangular plaque is made of anodized aluminum, measuring 3.94 inches (100 mm) high by 3.23 inches (82 mm) wide. It?s?attached to the front left side of Curiosity?s deck with four bolts. (Explore Curiosity in 3D?here.)

Dust, pebbles and variously-sized bits of Mars can be seen scattered around the plaque and deck, leftover detritus from the rover?s landing.

The complete list of signatures is:

Barack Obama, President, United States of America

Joe Biden, Vice President

John P. Holdren, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy

Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Edward J. Weiler, Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate (2008?2011)

James Green, Director, Planetary Sciences Division

Doug McCuistion, Director, Mars Exploration Program

Michael Meyer, Program Scientist, Mars Exploration Program

David Lavery, Program Executive, Mars Science Laboratory

In another image taken on the same sol, Curiosity shows some national pride with a circular medallion decorated with the stars and stripes of the American flag. The 68-mm-wide circular aluminum plate is affixed to one of the rover?s?rocker arms. It?s just?one of its four ?mobility logos? ? the others having the NASA logo, the JPL logo and the Curiosity mission logo.

The main purpose of Curiosity?s MAHLI camera is to acquire close-up, high-resolution views of rocks and soil at the rover?s Gale Crater field site. Developed for NASA by?Malin Space Science Systems?in San Diego, CA, the camera is capable of focusing on any target at distances of about 0.8 inch (2.1 centimeters) to infinity, providing versatility for other uses, such as views of the rover itself from different angles.

Happy National Chocolate Milk Day! | WTVR.com ? Richmond News ...

chocolate_milk

It?s a day adults and children can be excited about? Thursday, September 27, is National Chocolate Milk Day!

The delicious drink was invented by Sir Hans Sloane in 1687. Sloane was a doctor and praised the ?health giving? qualities of chocolate milk.

His other claim to fame was succeeding Sir Isaac Newton as President of the Royal Society in Britain.

According to the National?Chocolate?Milk day site, drinking chocolate was fairly uncommon until the 1820s because no one knew how to produce a smooth chocolate taste in liquid form.

In 1828 the Van Houten company in Amsterdam invented the cocoa pressing method, which created a?light, fluffy chocolate powder that would dissolve in water or milk.

National Coffee Day is coming up soon?this Saturday, Sept. 29.

Top 10 Most Expensive Domains Names Of All Time! - BloggingeHow

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

PFT's power rankings: Texans move to top

Houston Texans v Denver BroncosGetty Images

1. Texans (five first-place votes):? Like the SI jinx and the Madden curse, being at the top of this poll has led to three losses (Packers, Patriots, 49ers) in three weeks.

2. Ravens:? The field goal was good.? The team is very good.

3. Falcons:? They still won?t be taken seriously until they win a game in January.? This year, they could win a game in February, too.

4. 49ers:? Randy Moss needs to change his trademark saying to ?I play when they want me to play.?

5. Giants: Every team says ?next man up.?? Few teams have the depth to pull it off.

6. Packers:? Whether it?s #OccupyLambeau or #CheeseheadRiot or something else, Packers fans will be galvanized by last night?s outcome.? And that?s the worst thing that could have happened for the NFL.

7. Cardinals:? The best defense in the NFL resides in the NFC West.? But not in the city where you thought it was.

8. Patriots:? The last time the Pats had a losing season, they won the Super Bowl.

9. Seahawks:? I put them a lot lower on my own ballot, since they actually lost last night?s game.

10. Cowboys:? Tony Romo felt like he?d been golfing on Sunday ? and cold-cocked by a driver.

11. Steelers:? If this is how much the team passes with a run-based offense, we?d hate to see how many passing yards Roethlisberger would have if the offense were premised on the pass.

12. Bears:? Based on Jay Cutler?s passer rating this year, J?Marcus Webb should be the one doing the bumping.

13. Broncos:? Peyton Manning is very happy that Joe Mays plays for the Broncos.

14. Bengals:? Finally, the Bengals won a game they were supposed to lose.

15. Jets:? Rex Ryan?s demeanor on Monday sent a clear message:? ?Just.? End.? The.? Season.?

16. Vikings:? It?s fitting that the franchise?s biggest upset since Randy Moss pretended to show his butt to the fans at Lambeau Field would entail the Vikings kicking the butt of Moss and his new teammates.

17. Eagles:? Arguably the worst 2-1 team in years, the Eagles could be on their way to 8-8 (at best) if they fall to 2-2 on Sunday night against the Giants.

18. Bills:? Not bad for a team that some thought would go winless after Week One.

19. Chargers:? Those 9,200 people who didn?t buy tickets knew what they were doing.

20. Raiders:? Not bad for a team that some thought would go winless after Week Two.

21. Titans:? Not bad for a team that some thought would go winless after Week Two.

22. Redskins:? Not good for a team that most thought would go to the playoffs after Week One.

23. Lions: Even the smartest coaches can do some really dumb things.

24. Buccaneers:? Crashing victory formation provides a nice diversion from a loss.

25. Panthers:? Looks like someone has decided to be an entertainer and an icon, and not the best football player he can be.

26. Rams:? The good news?? The Rams are improving.? The bad news?? So is the rest of the division.

27. Chiefs:? Winning in the Superdome suddenly lacks the sizzle it recently had.

28. Jaguars:? Blaine Gabbert went Gangnam Style on the Colts.

29. Colts:? Howe didd wee loooz?????? TRADE WINDZ BLOWING AGAIN!!!!? HOTTT!!!!

30. Saints:? Sean Payton is getting ready to ask for a raise.

31. Dolphins:? Block that kick!? But not when I call a timeout!

32. Browns:? Which comes first?? Formal approval of Jimmy Haslam?s purchase of the team or a win?

Preserving My Most Cherished Baby Clothing #dreftlaundry

Special outfits were plentiful when I had my first baby six years ago. I had two baby showers, one with family and one at work, and literally felt showered with gifts. ?It was easy to pick out some special outfits to keep forever. But when my third child Wesley was born, everything was different.

This was my third boy. There was no baby shower. ?I am now staying at home with my boys so there are no coworkers to go in on a special gift. I can actually count on my hand the number of people who purchased Wesley a gift and so this time around I was able to pick out some very precious outfits that came directly from mommy. I didn?t need to feel guilty for buying more clothes because he needed some and I believe every baby should be celebrated. Regardless of the clothing I had kept from my first two, he deserved some clothing that was all his own.
I purchased this very special bodysuit from an Etsy shop. I love the modern style and colors, but more importantly, this is one is personalized and certainly something I can cherish forever.

I took these shots of him at 6 weeks. Now that he is six months I can?t help but get a tug at the heart strings remembering how little he once was and how fast he is growing. My precious Wesley James.

If there is one thing I?ve learned since having my third, it is that I appreciate clothing that is soft, comfortable and can be mixed and matched. I love simple?separates?that are fun! And with experience comes the know-how to keep my baby in stain free clothing. As much as possible anyway!

When Wesley was young I had to stay on top of potential blow outs and the mess they make on clothing. Now that Wesley is eating solids, I try to stay away from light prints that can be easily stained with darker foods like carrots!?Rinsing his clothing and pre-treating the stains as soon as possible is always a must. Dreft Laundry Stain Remover is perfect for this job and is specially formulated for tough stains. And did you know Dreft laundry detergent isn?t just for babies? I wash all my kids clothing in it to cut down on extra loads and it works great. Nothing beats that special scent.

What special baby outfit will you cherish forever?

?

Whether you?re a first timer or the greatest, grandest mother of them all, there?s on thing moms have agreed on for over 75 years- Dreft makes your little one?s fabric feel as clean and soft as can be.?

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Dreft. As a part of this program I received the product, the opinions and text are all mine.

Builder held for structure on reserved forest land - Real Estate India

??|?? September 23, 2012 ?? 09:48am ??|Contributed by manoja

PUNE: The forest department, Pune, on Friday night arrested builder Bharat Vohra (40) from Kothrud for allegedly constructing a six-storied building by encroaching on a reserved forest land in Wanowrie.

Vohrawas sent to forest custody remand till September 24.

Range forest officer V B Bhadale said Vohra had purchased a land for constructing a building adjoining the reserved forest land at survey number 49 in Wanowrie a few years ago. However, without seeking permission from the state government, he encroached upon 23 gunthas. The encroachments were discovered when an inspection was conducted by the forest officials recently.

The builder was arrested for committing an offence under relevant sections of the Indian Forest Act, Forest Conservation Act and Indian Penal Code.

Vohrawas produced before a magisterial court for seeking forest custody remand of seven days. The forest department counsel Abhijit Sakurkar told the court that the custodial interrogation of Vohra was essential as he had allegedly forged documents for grabbing the said land.

Sakurkar produced a map to show that the encroached land was a reserved forest and sought time to seize original documents from Vhora?s possession. He argued that Vohra had allegedly caused a massive destruction to the forest land by his act and sought time to identify the role played by his other associates.

Sakurkar suspected the involvement of the PMC and land survey department and retired police officials for aiding Vohra in the crime.

Advocate Sanjay Kadu, representing Vohra, claimed that his client was in legal possession of the land and a six-storied building was constructed after seeking permission from the PMC.

Kadu said that the forest officials had fined Vohra Rs 2,000 for constructing a compound wall on their land in 2009. The officials had reprimanded Vhora of encroaching on their land in future. They had also given a report to their superiors stating that he had not made encroachments two years ago. Vohra had purchased the land from another person in 2007 who had obtained permission from the PMC for constructing the building. Vohra had just revised the building plans, he added.

Don't defend marriage, deregulate it - Menzies House

385860_10150627396898065_1586292448_n

Henry Innis argues we need to get the government out of marriage:

The gay marriage debate is once again raging?in Australia. It?s an issue which is pervasive in the minds of many, and stands as one of the great moral divides that exists in today?s political landscape. We can see the arguments made for preserving the traditional family unit, just as the arguments for ending the divisions between relationships.

?But really, that?s not what this argument should be about. This argument should be about asking why a particular group, in this case the LGBT community and their supporters, are advocates of a further intrusion by the state on their lives.

?Let?s look at the current status quo: currently, the government defines the terms, relationship and even the stringent regulation of how a committed, long term relationship ought to function. This is, to my mind, a shocking indictment of the addiction to government that has emerged in our culture.

?So let me propose an alternative: don?t legislate gay marriage, and abolish the Marriage Act entirely. It seems bordering on ridiculous that a bunch of grown adults, capable of committing themselves to another, need their hands held as to the terms and definitions of what that commitment will be.

It?s up to us to end the debate in terms of giving the government yet more authority over the people it governs. Let?s turn our heads to how we can get government out of more individual decisions and commitments.?

Documenting women's experiences with chromosome abnormalities found in new prenatal test

Documenting women's experiences with chromosome abnormalities found in new prenatal test

Monday, September 24, 2012

We often hear that "knowledge is power." But, that isn't always the case, especially when the knowledge pertains to the health of an unborn child, with murky implications, at best. A new study, led by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, begins to document this exception to the general rule.

Barbara Bernhardt, MS, CGC, a genetic counselor at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues contacted a small group of women who are participating in a larger Columbia University study investigating the use of a genetic test called a DNA microarray to identify the possibility of prenatal chromosomal abnormalities. Bernhardt is also co-director of the Penn Center for the Integration of Genetic Healthcare Technologies.

The study's goal: To document a woman's experience upon learning that her child's genetic material contained chromosomal abnormalities. The women's responses to this type of news were mostly negative, ranging from saying they "needed support" after getting the results to describing the results as "toxic knowledge," that they wish they hadn't received.

DNA microarrays represent a relatively new approach to genetic testing. Classically, chromosomal abnormalities are detected with karyotyping, which uses DNA staining and microscopy to identify such large-scale abnormalities as trisomy 21, associated with Down's syndrome. Yet the technique lacks the resolution to detect smaller ? yet still significant -- chromosomal changes.

That's where DNA microarrays come in. Microarrays use an array of DNA "probes" to search for matching bits of DNA from across the genome. In theory, if a piece of DNA is missing or duplicated, that change can be detected on a microarray, even if it is too small to be detected by karyotyping.

DNA microarrays are often used by physicians following birth to identify chromosomal abnormalities in children with unexplained developmental delays or congenital defects. However, the technique is also being applied prenatally. The problem, though, unlike some genetic changes that definitely lead to disease, is that the significance of the changes DNA microarrays identify (called copy-number variants) isn't always clear. Nor is it necessarily obvious what actions parents, doctors, and genetic counselors should take in light of the findings.

Bernhardt set out to document the experiences of women receiving such information. Of the 4,450 women enrolled in the Columbia University trial, Bernhardt and her team selected 54 who had received chromosome microarray results that showed abnormalities in the previous six months. Of those, they interviewed 23 regarding the subjects' recollections of their informed-consent discussions, genetic counseling, test results, and follow-up.

The team identified five "key elements" that describe the women's experiences:

"An offer too good to pass up." Many of the women accepted the offer for testing because it was offered at no cost and posed no additional risk to them or their unborn child. Yet they did so without necessarily considering the potential significance and ambiguity of the information they could receive.

"Blindsided by the results." Women reported being caught off-guard by the microarray data, which generally arrived one to two weeks after preliminary (and seemingly normal) karyotype information.

"Uncertainty and unquantifiable risks." Women had difficulty making sense of the test results, as copy-number variants are often of either uncertain clinical significance, or produce a wide array of possible developmental outcomes. As a result, the women's time-critical and emotionally charged decisions about whether to terminate a pregnancy, for instance, were complicated.

"Need for support." The women reported needing support from counselors, spouses or partners to digest and consider the information they had received and to make critical decisions regarding their pregnancies.

"Toxic knowledge." The women noted that in many cases the array results constituted "toxic knowledge" that they, in retrospect, wish they hadn't learned, because it negatively impacted their pregnancy, birth, and postnatal experiences. As Bernhardt describes it, "They watch their babies like hawks, ? always waiting for the other shoe to drop."

According to Bernhardt, chromosomal microarrays pose the same ambiguities after birth as prenatally. The difference is that postnatal testing is done because the child already exhibits an unexplained abnormality, and physicians hope the test can pinpoint its cause. "But when you find [an abnormality] in a fetus it puts the woman and couple into a tailspin because they have no clue what to expect," she says. "And the couple is immediately faced with whether or not to terminate the pregnancy."

The take-home message, Bernhardt says, is that genetic counselors must be prepared to spend more time with parents to help them explore their reasons for wanting microarray testing. Counselors also need to emphasize to parents the potentially ambiguous nature of the microarray results, how to consider potential responses, and how to make the best decisions they can based on both available scientific data and the clients' beliefs.

The study, "Women's experiences receiving abnormal prenatal chromosomal microarray testing results," was published online September 6 in the journal Genetics in Medicine. Additional authors include Penn researcher Danielle Soucier; as well as Karen Hanson, Melissa Savage, and Ronald Wapner from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons; and Laird Jackson, Drexel University College of Medicine.

Christine Mitchell calls herself ?The Car Lady,? but if she wasn?t a licensed technician with 28 years experience, she could easily perform stand-up comedy.

On September 17, Mitchell addressed a full house at Highland GM in Aurora, delivering snippets of automotive wisdom interspersed with jokes and one-liners that kept the audience laughing ? and focused on her message of common-sense car care.

She was right at home in the dealership, having spent 12 years as a GM technician, but her words were universal. Be it the often-repeated message of changing your oil, or the more obscure warning about overfilling your gas tank (it can damage your charcoal canister and cost $600 or more), Mitchell gave all those in attendance some advice to consider.

Also speaking at the event was Erynn Real, dealer relationship manager for GM Financial. Working in the auto industry since 1998, she covered all the bases in purchasing a vehicle, including the common debate of whether to finance or lease.

Jennifer Copely, general sales manager at Highland, noted the event was a tremendous success, giving everybody not just an entertaining evening of refreshments and hors d?oevres, but some information they can take home and use right away.

?Next to your home, a vehicle is typically your second-largest purchase,? she adds. ?It makes sense to gain a better understanding of how it works, and to commit to do those things we discussed tonight. I hope this event will help our guests extend the life of their investment.?

Donations made at Highland Auto Professional?s ?In the driver?s seat? event went to POGO (Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario) to help support kids with cancer across York Region. Catering was supplied by Edward Street Bistro in Aurora

God, Food, Run: Baked Veggie Fri Chik Recipe

This month's Recipe Redux theme called for fermented foods. I chose Greek yogurt as my fermented food of choice for my recipe. I have grown to enjoy this particular type of yogurt and realized it can also add a wonderful flavor to savory dishes. For vegetarian and non-vegetarian lovers, you just might want to give this simple meatless recipe a try.? This dish is low in saturated fat with a decent amount of that good-for-you fat...monounsaturated fat.

Ingredients:

1 can Fri Chik (sliced into long pieces)
1/3 of an onion chopped
1/4 cup of cream of mushroom soup
4 ounces of Chobani plain yogurt
1/2 tsp Pepper
1/2 tsp of Mushroom seasoning
1 cup of Daiya Mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup of panko bread crumbs

Directions:
Heat oven at 350 degrees.

In a small casserole dish, lay down the Fri Chik pieces.? Place onions on top of Fri Chik pieces and in between.? Pour cream of mushroom soup on top of Fri Chik and onions.? Take spoon and spread out cream of mushroom soup all over Fri Chik and onions.? Place Greek yogurt on top of Fri Chik, onions, and cream of mushroom soup layer.? Take spoon and spread Greek yogurt all over the cream of mushroom soup layer. Add pepper and mushroom seasoning on top of Greek yogurt layer. Spread Daiya cheese across the top.? Spread panko breadcrumbs across the top of cheese layer.? Bake in oven for 25 minutes.

Please take a look at all the other great recipe's by the women of Recipe Redux down below and enjoy!

(AP) ? Space shuttle Endeavour will spend its last flying day Friday not rocketing into space but doing what most tourists do when visiting California: Taking in the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge and the Hollywood Sign.

In what promises to be a crowd-rousing air show, Endeavour, strapped atop a 747 jumbo jet, will take off after sunrise from Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert and dip low over various landmarks in a 4 1/2-hour sightseeing flight before landing at the Los Angeles International Airport.

It's Endeavour's last aerial hurrah before it spends its retirement years as a museum piece.

Some 400 trees had to be cleared along the 12-mile route to make room for its trek from LAX, a move that has riled some residents in affected neighborhoods. Museum officials have pledged to replant double the number of chopped trees.

"We're so excited to be welcoming Endeavour home in grand style with these flyovers," said Jeffrey Rudolph, president of the California Science Center, where the shuttle will go on permanent display.

Since Endeavour will buzz by some of the Golden State's most iconic sights, law enforcement and transportation authorities warned motorists not to "gawk and drive."

"We want people to take in this majestic show," Los Angeles police Cmdr. Scott Kroeber said earlier this week. "But if you're driving, please drive and don't try to take in the show simultaneously."

Extra officers will be on duty along the freeways near LAX to make sure traffic flows smoothly as the shuttle zooms overhead.

Endeavour returned to its birthplace Thursday after an emotional cross-country ferry flight that made a special flyover of Tucson, Ariz., to honor its last commander, Mark Kelly, and his wife, former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head, was "hooting and hollering" as Endeavour looped around her hometown, according to her former aide C.J. Karamargin.

NASA's shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled in Palmdale near Edwards Air Force Base. The military outpost 100 miles north of Los Angeles served as the original shuttle landing strip and remained a backup site in case of stormy weather at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The youngest shuttle, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts were killed.

During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.

On its maiden flight in 1992, a trio of spacewalking astronauts grabbed a stranded communications satellite in for repair. It also flew the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to fix a faulty mirror. But most of its flights ferried cargo and equipment to the International Space Station, which is near completion.

Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service.

Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home. In April, Discovery arrived at the Smithsonian Institution's hangar in Virginia. Atlantis, which closed out the shuttle program, will stay in Florida where it will be towed a short distance to the Kennedy Space Center's visitor center in the fall.

Endeavour will remain at an airport hangar for several weeks as crews ready the shuttle for its own road trip. Unlike Atlantis, it will creep through city streets to the California Science Center near downtown.

Microsoft permanently patches critical IE hole

3 hrs.

Days?after Microsoft learned of a nasty Internet Explorer flaw that malware writers had already begun to exploit, the company pushed out a permanent software patch.

"This security update is rated Critical for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows clients and Moderate for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows servers," a Microsoft security bulletin published Friday?read.

The flaw left Internet Explorer users vulnerable to drive-by downloads and affected all currently supported versions of Windows.

Windows 8, due to be released to the general public Oct. 26, and its accompanying browser, Internet Explorer 10, are not affected.

Windows users who have automatic updating turned on will get the patch without any effort. For those who don't, Microsoft urges them to deploy Windows Update manually.

Microsoft posted "fix it" workaround software Wednesday that temporarily deactivated the flaw. Friday's permanent patch overrides the "fix it," which does not itself need to be disabled or uninstalled before the patch is installed.

Lee Chong Wei smacks Anand Pawar in first round of Men?s Singles event ? Japan Open Update

Men?s Singles maestro Lee Chong Wei registered his presence in the Yonex Japan Open as he thrashed Anand Pawar in the opening round on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.

World Number two shuttler took just 31 minutes to clear the first hurdle with a favourable score position of 21-13 and 21-9.

The Malaysian ace, who is the top seeded shuttler in this tournament, entertained the local crowd by displaying his badminton craft in Yoyogi National Stadium of Tokyo.

Chong Wei played with great precision and blew away his opponent by sealing a straight-set victory.

Now his next challenge will be to surpass Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and the critics are giving him better odds for a spot in the quarter-final round.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist Chong Wei will hardly face any trouble en-route to glory in the absence of his arch-rival Lin Dan of China. He has showed his intentions with an emphatic start of this tournament.

In the opening match, Chong Wei laid the foundation of his supremacy by ruling the court in the first set. He set himself in motion with three consecutive points after 2-1 and then continued with same pace in next couple of rallies.

At half time, the Malaysian badminton king was enjoying the upper hand in 11-8 total. He capitalised this advantage immediately after the break and mounted pressure by registering an indomitable margin of 16-10.

This deficit proved too heavy for the young Pawar and he knelt down after reading 13-21 score on the board.

Next game proved a one-sided affair as Chong Wei did not give the Indian player even a single counterattack opportunity and swept the table with a significant difference of twelve points.

He unleashed a series of masterly crafted strokes and confined his competitor in the rear court. This power packed campaign took him to a dominating position of 8-3.

Anand Pawar looked completely bewildered in front of the badminton king as he could pocket only nine points throughout this segment.

Chong Wei relished full benefits of this psychological edge and ensured his presence in the next round with a staggering knock of 21-9.

Warming ocean could start big shift of Antarctic ice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Fast-flowing and narrow glaciers have the potential to trigger massive changes in the Antarctic ice sheet and contribute to rapid ice-sheet decay and sea-level rise, a new study has found.

Research results published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveal in more detail than ever before how warming waters in the Southern Ocean are connected intimately with the movement of massive ice-sheets deep in the Antarctic interior.

"It has long been known that narrow glaciers on the edge of the Antarctica act as discrete arteries termed ice streams, draining the interior of the ice sheet," says Dr Chris Fogwill, an author of the study and an ARC Future Fellow with the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre.

"However, our results have confirmed recent observations suggesting that ocean warming can trigger increased flow of ice through these narrow corridors. This can cause inland sectors of the ice-sheet -- some larger than the state of Victoria -- to become thinner and flow faster."

The researchers, led by Dr Nicholas Golledge from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, tested high-resolution model simulations against reconstructions of the Antarctic ice sheet from 20,000 years ago, during the last glacial maximum.

They used a new model, capable of resolving responses to ice-streams and other fine- scale dynamic features that interact over the entire ice sheet. This had not previously been possible with existing models. They then used this data to analyze the effects of a warming ocean over time.

The results showed that while glacier acceleration triggered by ocean warming is relatively localized, the extent of the resultant ice-sheet thinning is far more widespread. This observation is particularly important in light of recently observed dynamic changes at the margins of Antarctica. It also highlighted areas that are more susceptible than others to changes in ocean temperatures.

The glaciers that responded most rapidly to warming oceans were found in the Weddell Sea, the Admundsen Sea, the central Ross Sea and in the Amery Trough.

The finding is important because of the enormous scale and potential impact the Antarctic ice sheets could have on sea-level rise if they shift rapidly, says Fogwill. "To get a sense of the scale, the Antarctic ice sheet is 3km deep -- three times the height of the Blue Mountains in many areas -- and it extends across an area that is equivalent to the distance between Perth and Sydney.

"Despite its potential impact, Antarctica's effect on future sea level was not fully included in the last IPCC report because there was insufficient information about the behavior of the ice sheet. This research changes that. This new, high-resolution modelling approach will be critical to improving future predictions of Antarctica's contribution to sea level over the coming century and beyond."

7 Steps To Instant Calm

By Leslie Barrie

Between your busy work schedule, taking care of the kids, running errands, and, oh, the hundred other things you have to do in a day, it's easy to forget the amount of stress you're actually under.

But your body is well aware. All that tension could start a chain reaction of health problems. "When you repeatedly get stressed, your nervous system stays keyed up, so even small amounts of stress can make you feel overwhelmed," says Henry Emmons, MD, author of The Chemistry of Calm.

That's why it's so important to build in a relaxation routine for those times when life goes haywire. Learn how to cultivate calm with these simple suggestions.

More From Health:
8 Types Of Work-Related Stress
9 Things To Stop Worrying About
Head-To-Toe Solutions For Stress

  • 1. Look For The Signs

The best way to manage your stress is to keep it from building up in the first place. But it can be hard to tell when you're headed toward the danger zone, because your body's signals can be subtle. "People often aren't aware that stress affects quality of sleep -- you may get eight hours, but still not get much deep sleep, so you feel worn out," Dr. Emmons says. To keep your stress level in check, take a few minutes each day to think over any unusual changes in your habits or physical health that may be spurred by anxiety.

  • 2. Shift Your Focus

When you're feeling tense, you may get the (unproductive) urge to mentally replay what went wrong over and over in your mind. Dr. Emmons recommends shifting your focus to your body instead. Find a quiet place to sit down, and concentrate on feeling the seat beneath you. Then take long, deep breaths from your diaphragm; try inhaling through your nose for a count of four, holding for two and exhaling through your mouth for seven. Exhaling longer than you inhale deepens your breathing, which helps calm your nervous system. "You can even practice your breathing when you're not stressed, so you know exactly what deep-breathing counts soothe you," Dr. Emmons says.

  • 3. Get A Move On

It's easy to use stress as an excuse to skip exercise -- you've got way too many other things on your mind, right? But working out actually helps balance stress hormones, Dr. Emmons says. So take a break, and walk up and down a few flights of stairs, or sign up for that kickboxing class you've been dying to try. Then cool down from your routine with some mellow music: Make a special "soothing" playlist for your iPod, recommends Beth Hamilton, MD, co-author of <em>So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women</em>. Research suggests that your brain waves will sync up with the slow rhythm, putting you in a meditative state.

  • 4. Snack Right

During stressful times, it's human nature to want to treat yourself to a piece of cake. But it's more important than ever to stick to your healthy eating habits, says Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of <em>Eat Your Way to Happiness.</em> Sugary munchies spike your blood-glucose level, making you feel even more jittery. For a healthy yet stress-busting treat, dip fresh strawberries in dark chocolate sauce, Somer suggests. The fruit's vitamin C decreases stress-induced free radicals, while dark chocolate helps reduce stress hormones (such as cortisol) in the body. Another option: Snack on carrots or celery sticks. Chomping on crunchy (but healthy!) snacks helps you release pent-up frustration, Somer says.

  • 5. Phone A Friend

Spending time with pals helps our bodies pump out the feel-good hormone oxytocin. So meet up with a friend at the end of a crazy-busy day, or call during your lunch break. Even better: Make time to hang out regularly -- you'll get a continuous boost to your well-being. Just don't turn your talks into bitchfests; ranting will get you worked up again, Dr. Emmons says.

  • 6. Get Out!

Holing up at your desk can make you get stuck in "I'm overwhelmed!" mode. Simply breathing some fresh air can improve your outlook, helping you deal with tough situations more calmly. Step outside and enjoy the head-clearing moment rather than thinking of all the things you have to get done. If there's a garden nearby, stop and smell the flowers. Research shows that inhaling certain scents (like lavender) can help reset a stressed immune system to normal levels.

  • 7. Prep For Bed

You know how it goes: Just when you lie down for a good night's sleep, all your worries come rushing back. And the lack of sleep only makes you feel more anxious. To combat this vicious cycle, reach for a pad and pen, and jot down any negative thoughts or to-dos that pop into your head, says Sue Patton Thoele, author of The Mindful Woman. It's counterintuitive, but getting your thoughts on paper actually helps you put them aside.

  • How to De-stress

BeYOU.tv videos: Gary Null teaches you how to de-stressing techniques.
