Millinocket firefighters save several pets from fire - Bangor Daily News

MILLINOCKET, Maine ? Firefighters battled thick smoke to rescue two cats and a dog from a fire that damaged the cellar and living room of an Aroostook Avenue house Sunday morning.

Firefighters had to stop homeowner Thomas Jameson from going back into his house at 423 Aroostook Ave. to retrieve his pets after he had rescued a dog and a cat, Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte said.

With flames burning into the cellar ceiling and first-floor living room and smoke thick throughout the rest of the house, Turcotte went inside and found a dog and a cat and Firefighter-EMT Sam Monteith rescued a cat, Turcotte said.

?It was the funniest thing,? Turcotte said. ?The cat I found was just lying there, unresponsive, and I thought it was dead. I shook it a little bit and it came right alive. It hissed and clawed at me. I was thinking, ?Oh my goodness.??

Firefighters have pet-sized breathing masks to help resuscitate pets, but didn?t need to use them on the animals. Jameson, however, was treated for smoke inhalation at Millinocket Regional Hospital after refusing treatment at the scene, Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Malcolm said.

The fire apparently started in an ash box in the basement directly beneath Jameson?s living room fireplace. The ash box is large, approximately 16 inches across and about two feet deep, and embedded in cement, but was piled high with ash because it hadn?t been cleaned in a while, Turcotte said.

?It appears there was quite a bit of hot ash in there,? he said.

Ash that fell to the box from a fireplace fire the family started the night before apparently ignited thick building timbers hanging over the ash box. Turcotte said the timbers might also have ignited because they were badly dried out after decades of exposure to ash box heat.

Turcotte smelled smoke at about 8:55 a.m. and either he or a neighbor called 911. When firefighters arrived about five minutes later, heavy black smoke was pouring from the front door, Turcotte said.

Thick basement smoke and intense heat made finding the seat of the fire difficult, but firefighters doused the flames before they could spread very far into the living room area, Turcotte said.

East Millinocket firefighters were called immediately to the scene because Millinocket is down one engine, and they assisted in fighting the flames, Turcotte said. The flames might have eaten into the first floor and become uncontrollable had the fire burned much longer.

?They did a really good quick stop,? Malcolm said. The fire ?could have gone right up the chimney chase but it didn?t. They saved a lot with the initial knockdown.?

The Jameson family won?t be able to occupy the house until repairs are made. Damage estimates run from $30,000 to $40,000.

The fire is Millinocket?s second in about a month. A malfunctioning space heater sparked a fire that destroyed most of a second-floor apartment on Katahdin Avenue on Nov. 28.

Sunday?s fire, Turcotte said, underlined the importance of keeping fireplaces clear of ash buildup. He encouraged homeowners to have their chimneys and fire boxes cleaned professionally or at least emptied.

2 Iraqi Sunni protesters wounded by gunfire

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Gunshots wounded at least two people Sunday at demonstrations in western Iraq when bodyguards protecting a senior Sunni politician opened fire to disperse protesters, a local official said, marking the first casualties in a week of rallies.

Some of the demonstrators were demanding that the politician quit the Shiite-dominated government.

Iraqi Sunnis angry over their perceived second-class treatment by the government have been protesting for more than a week in the vast western Anbar province. Up to now there has been no violence.

The demonstrations reflect increasing sectarian tensions in Iraq, which is struggling to maintain stability nearly a decade after the U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime, and a year after the last U.S. troops withdrew.

The violence erupted near the city of Ramadi during a visit by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq, according to Anbar provincial council member Talib Hamadi al-Dulaimi.

It was unclear who fired the shots that caused the injuries, and if those hurt were targeted intentionally. It is often difficult to assign blame for gunfire injuries in Iraq, where weapons ownership is common and security forces often shoot into the air to break up scuffles.

Al-Mutlaq is one of the government's most senior Sunni politicians and has been a frequent critic of the Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He last year branded al-Maliki a dictator in a TV interview. Then he reconciled with the prime minister and remained in the power-sharing administration.

Although his visit was not announced in advance, he would have expected to find a sympathetic crowd in Anbar.

Shots were fired in the air after demonstrators insisted that al-Mutlaq show support for their protest by resigning from the government, al-Dulaimi said.

In local TV footage of the incident, protesters threw rocks and bottles at the entourage as it left the area, and automatic gunfire could be heard. One of the protesters shouted "Kick him out!" Another yelled, "They took the coward away in a taxi."

Al-Mutlaq's office had no immediate comment.

Anbar provincial councilman Sheik Efan Saadoun said protesters in Anbar are growing dissatisfied with elected politicians, both at the provincial level and in Baghdad.

"They consider them to be conspirators because they have not seen anything from them in terms of improved public services and living standards," he said. "They are fed up with us and the whole the political process, but they don't know how difficult it is for us to get anything for them from a government that doesn't work properly."

On Friday, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets near Ramadi and other Sunni-dominated cities in the largest rallies in a week of demonstrations. The protests followed the arrest earlier this month of 10 bodyguards assigned to the Sunni finance minister, Rafia al-Issawi.

Although the arrests triggered the demonstrations, the protesters' demands tap into deeper Sunni grievances of perceived discrimination by the Shiite-led government.

Anbar province was once the heart of the deadly Sunni insurgency that emerged after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Al-Qaida is believed to be rebuilding in pockets of Anbar, and militants linked to it are thought to be helping Sunni rebels in Syria.

Magloire's return helps spark College of Staten Island to 83-52 Tournament of Heroes win (photo gallery)

Welcome back, Bloochy Magloire.

It didn?t take long for the College of Staten Island?s high-scoring guard at make his presence felt Saturday night as the Dolphins rolled to a 83-52 victory over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the opening round of the 11th annual Tournament

of Heroes.

Magloire, a key component to last season?s 26-5 team that won two games in the NCAA Division III Tournament, hit his first shot of the season ? a 3-pointer from the top ? to give CSI a 18-15 lead six minutes into the game.

The Dolphins did not trail thereafter.

?He?s an explosive offensive player who makes a big difference,? said CSI coach Tony Petosa after watching his team extend its winning streak to six while improving to 6-1. ?No question he can really make teams worry.?

Magloire, a 6-foot-3 Susan Wagner HS product, finished with 17 points in his first action after missing the first six games due to an academic issue.

The visiting Trailblazers (3-7) had plenty of other matters to worry about, however. Junior point guard Jonathan Chadwick-Myers had a game-high 18 points, while 6-11 Dylan Bulger (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Matt Van Manen (11 points, 10 rebounds) contributed double-double numbers.

The Dolphins ran at will and sophomore forward Javon Cox was active with eight points, nine rebounds and a dominating seven blocked shots that tied a school single-game record.

?We don?t have as much depth or athleticism as we had last year,? said Petosa of the NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier, ?but we can be a very good defensive and rebounding team.?

CSI raced to a 43-28 halftime edge and used a 14-5 run to build a 57-33 lead just six minutes into the second half. The host team shot 51.7 percent from the floor while holding MCLA to 26.2 percent (17 of 65).

The Dolphins also owned a 48-39 rebounding advantage and blocked 12 shots, the second highest total in school history.

CSI advances to Sunday?s 3 p.m. championship game against Methodist (N.C.), an 86-71 opening-game winner over SUNY Institute of Technology.

The Dolphins have never won their own Tournament of Heroes title, although Petosa said that isn?t an obsession with his young squad.

?We want to get better every day,? he said. ?We want to win games and we want to become a better team.?

Now that Magloire?s back on board, those goals are looking better and better. ?

NOTES: Methodist?s 6-6 junior forward Bryan Hockaday, a Curtis HS product, had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the 2-7 Monarchs. ... Methodist, from Fayetteville, N.C., had six players score in double figures, led by Brandon Monk?s 18 points, while SUNYIT?s Desmian Greer led all scorers with 26 points ... Attack on Libyan church building kills two

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - An explosion on Sunday at a building belonging to a Coptic church in western Libya killed two Egyptian men and wounded two others, a military spokesman said.

Attackers threw a homemade bomb at an administration building belonging to the Egyptian Coptic church in Dafniya, close to the western city of Misrata, said Ibrahim Rajab of Misrata military council.

The Egyptian consul in the city, Tareq Dahrouj, said he had visited the church and the building where the two church workers were killed early on Sunday.

"The explosion seems like it was very strong and I have started making my investigations with Misrata officials," he said.

Libya has small communities of Egyptians, Greeks and Italians who account for most of the Christian minority in the predominantly Islamic country.

Libya's new rulers have struggled to impose their authority on a myriad of armed groups, who helped oust dictator Muammar Gaddafi last year but have yet to lay down their arms. Sunday's attack was the first major assault on a Christian target since the revolution.

In Egypt, following the removal in 2011 of President Hosni Mubarak, Coptic Christians have become increasingly worried after an upsurge in attacks on churches, which they blame on hardline Islamists.

Repeated attacks on foreign diplomatic and aid centres in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi have made it very dangerous for non-locals to work and live there.

The worst attack on a foreign target was on September 11, when the U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens and three embassy staff were killed in an attack on the consulate in Benghazi.

I'm very excited for this.

Hello! I'm not too keen on writing forum introduction posts, so I've adapted the outline from this site.

1) What's your username? Why'd you pick that username?

Zeprimus - it was a character name I came up with out of the blue while playing an MMO and it's stuck with ever since.

2) How'd you find this place? Google? Why'd you look it up on Google or whatever?

I did find this on Google, by searching for 'roleplaying forums'. I found some pretty interesting other choices, but I'm not looking for that kind of roleplaying. When I was younger, I did some forum roleplaying. I'm back for more because it is enjoyable, simply put.

3) How long have you roleplayed on forums or chat? On what sites? Did you start with tabletop games or such?

I roleplayed in various short-lived forum based RPs for a couple years when I was in high school, and to be honest I can't remember the name of the site now (it may be offline, it's been almost a decade). Since I was in 5th or 6th grade or so, I've played D&D and GURPS amongst a few others with friends. I've also done some in-game RPing in MMOs, LOTRO, Rift, and WoW specifically.

4) In coming to RPG, what've you been looking for specifically? A new home for roleplay? Better roleplay?

I'm looking for any amount of roleplay. Due to life, I'm not able to run or join an active table-top group right now or for the foreseeable future. Plus, forum-based roleplaying allows me to do what I love - write.

5) What kinds of roleplay are you interested in? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Go in-depth about it if you want.

I'm into anything, to be honest. I like all of it. I'm most experienced in fantasy and post-apocalyptic/modern, but for some reason I've become really interested in superhero RP. I'm not too into IP roleplaying anymore, unless it's very loose.

6) What're your hobbies? Do you collect rocks or mount insects?

I'm a senior in English, getting ready to enter an MFA program. I like to write a lot, as well as read and all that stuff. I'm married, so doing anything with my wife - cooking, traveling, watching great TV shows and movies, are all fun. I also play guitar and bass, although they're both casual now (I used to play in a bunch of punk rock bands when I was in high school).

7) What's something you're good at besides writing? Maybe you're on the volleyball team or you're a quick learner? Maybe you play the flute or can fold up chairs amazingly fast? xD

I'm a pretty good driver, which I guess is something. I live in Minnesota, where the roads can be absolute crap for half of the year, so I've learned how to adapt to that. Being a delivery driver for a few years also helped. As for the 'besides writing' bit, writing really is one of my passions - it's what I study and love. I've recorded a CD and EP in the past, written a bunch of songs, played a bunch of shows, so I guess you could say I'm an okay musican (I'm no Minaj, though).

8) Do you have any friends here at RPG that invited you here? Would you want to make more friends while you're here?

None, yet. I'd love to meet new people.

And lastly...

9) Do we get cookies for looking through your thread and saying hello?

As long as you have them enabled. ;)

Looking forward to having fun here, and hope to meet some awesome people and get my RP on! Thanks for reading.

-Zeprimus/Tom

The Joys of Sharing!! | Sohodox | Document Management Software ...

Managing information overload is not just a big company problem. Small businesses are equally affected by it. However unlike larger businesses, small businesses cannot throw money and resources at the problem. They need to find solutions, which do not strain their resources.

The good news is that once a challenge is clearly identified, small businesses are usually good at finding quick, smart and affordable solutions. So to start the year here is a little post on why sharing information should be one of the most crucial information management challenges that small business should tackle in 2013 ?

Share Better

You as the small business owner control access to a majority of information in your business.? Though there is no way around this in the initial years, as your business grows this can start acting as a bottleneck.

As you add more employees to your business you expect them to perform various business functions as well as you did. But do they have access to same amount and quality of information as you do? Can they succeed without it? Definitely not!

Though there are valid reasons for withholding certain information (for e.g. some financial data or passwords etc.), the bulk of the small business information remains inaccessible simply because that is the way it has always been! Security and privacy may seem like the reasons behind this but that is not normally the case. Inertia and fear of the unknown are more likely to be the reasons for information to remain locked up.

Opening up access to such information to employees can sometimes have magical consequences. Different minds notice different patterns, learn different things and arrive at different conclusion. The value of getting so many points of view cannot be calculated.

May be you are paying too much for a service which an employee knows how to get for cheaper. May be employees will notice that they are spending too much time on a client and the business is not making enough in return.

What to Share

Rather than making a list of information/documents that you want to share, you could do the opposite. Make a list of information/documents that you would not be comfortable sharing. Hope this will not be a very large list! Now go ahead and share the rest.

How to Share

A system like SOHODOX makes it really simply to put everything in one place so it becomes easy to share. The next big task is to decide how you will organize everything. After all if something cannot be easily found then sharing it would not be very useful. So decide the kind of folder hierarchy you will use to organize your documents, use tags (labels) liberally to provide multiple ways to find the same document.? For example Invoices from January 2013 might go into the Invoices > Jan 2013 folder but you might want to additionally label each invoice as Unpaid or Paid.

If you come up with an intuitive system for finding documents, it will ensure that employees will use the same system while adding new documents. This will make your information repository more valuable with each passing day.

Watch

Notice if your system is being used and keep tweaking things based on feedback from staff. You should notice a drop in the number of times you are contacted for information by your staff. You should see staff accessing information by themselves and making decisions faster. In short not only will your business be more efficient but you will find more time to focus on other aspects of your business.

What better New Year gift could you ask for your business! So go ahead, share and enjoy!

In the spirit of sharing we would love it, if you shared this blog post with your colleagues and friends!

New Year's new birth of freedom in Washington, Gettysburg

As New Year's Day approached 150 years ago, all eyes were on President Abraham Lincoln in expectation of what he warned 100 days earlier would be coming - his final proclamation declaring all slaves in states rebelling against the Union to be "forever free."

A tradition began Dec. 31, 1862, as many black churches held Watch Night services, awaiting word that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation would take effect amid a bloody Civil War. Later, congregations listened as the president's historic words were read aloud.

The proclamation would not end slavery outright and at the time couldn't be enforced by Lincoln in areas under Confederate control. But the president made clear from that day forward that his forces would be fighting to bring the Union back together without the institution of slavery.

Lincoln issued his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in September 1862, after the Battle of Antietam, announcing that if rebel states did not cease fighting and rejoin the Union by Jan. 1, 1863, all slaves in rebellious states or parts of states would be declared free from that date forward.

This year, the Watch Night tradition will follow the historic document to its home at the National Archives with a special midnight display planned with readings, songs and bell ringing among the nation's founding documents. And in Gettysburg, local volunteers will be stationed outside the David Wills House in Lincoln Square,

where President Lincoln completed writing the Gettysburg Address, with information and activities for adults and children.

The official document bears Lincoln's signature and the United States seal, setting it apart from copies and drafts. It will make a rare public appearance from Sunday to Tuesday - New Year's Day - for thousands of visitors to mark its anniversary. On New Year's Eve, the display will remain open past midnight as 2013 arrives.

"We will be calling back to an old

tradition," said U.S. Archivist David Ferriero, noting the proclamation's legacy. "When you see thousands of people waiting in line in the dark and cold ... we know that they're not there just for words on paper.

"On this 150th anniversary, we recall those who struggled with slavery in this country, the hope that sustained them and the inspiration the Emancipation Proclamation has given to those who seek justice."

The National Archives allows 100 visitors at a time into its rotunda, where the Emancipation Proclamation will be displayed along with the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. On the busiest days, 8,000 people file through for a glimpse of the founding charters.

Performances and re-enactments are scheduled to continue throughout New Year's Day. The U.S. Postal Service will unveil a new Emancipation Proclamation stamp as well.

This special display is just one of many commemorations planned in Washington and in churches nationwide to mark the anniversary of Lincoln's actions to end slavery and end the Civil War.

President Lincoln's Cottage in Washington, where the 16th president spent much of his time and where he began drafting the proclamation, is displaying a signed copy of the document through February. It also will host its own New Year's Eve celebration.

The Library of Congress will display the first draft handwritten by Lincoln. It will be on display for six weeks beginning Jan. 3 in the library's exhibit, "The Civil War in America," which features many personal letters and diaries from the era.

Also, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture just opened its newest exhibition, "Changing America," to recount the 1863 emancipation of slaves and the 1963 March on Washington for Civil Rights. It includes a rare signed copy of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution that ultimately abolished slavery.

The Watch Night tradition also continues at many sites Monday night.

In Washington, the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, where abolitionist Frederick Douglass was a member, will host a special 150th anniversary service.

History lovers say this is a chance to remember what the Emancipation Proclamation actually signified.

Lincoln wrote in part: "I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward, shall be free."

He went on to say the military would recognize the freedom of slaves, that freed slaves should avoid violence and that freed slaves could enlist in the U.S. armed forces. It did not immediately free a single slave, though, because Lincoln didn't have the power to enforce the declaration in the Confederacy.

Still, many slaves had already been freeing themselves, and the document gave them protection, said Reginald Washington, an archivist of African-American history at the National Archives.

"It was a first, important step in paving the way for the abolishment of slavery with the ratification of the 13th Amendment," he said.

It also brought "a fundamental change in the character of the war," Washington said. "With the stroke of Lincoln's pen, a war to preserve the union had overnight become a war of human liberation."

The proclamation became a symbol of hope for nearly 4 million slaves and a confirmation that the war should be fought to secure their freedom, said Washington, who is retiring from the Archives after nearly 40 years. Some historians and scholars have come to view to proclamation as one of the most important documents in U.S. history.

The final proclamation has been rarely shown because it was badly damaged decades ago by long exposure to light. After it was signed at the White House, it was kept at the State Department for many years with other presidential proclamations. In 1936, it was transferred to the National Archives.

Records show it was displayed between 1947 and 1949 in a "Freedom Train" exhibit that traveled the country. Then it was shown briefly in January 1963 to mark the 100th anniversary of its signing.

It wasn't until 1993 that the Emancipation Proclamation has been shown more regularly to the public. In the past decade, it has been shown in 10 other museums and libraries nationwide for no more than three days at a time to limit its exposure to light.

A 2011 exhibition at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., that was open around the clock drew lines amounting to eight-hour waits to see the document.

Conservators rotate which of the five pages are shown to limit their light exposure. In Washington, they will display pages two and five, which is Lincoln's signature page. High-quality copies are shown in place of the other original pages.

"It's rarely shown, and that's part of our strategy for preserving it and making it accessible," said Catherine Nicholson, an archives conservator. "Our goal is to keep its current condition so that it can be enjoyed not only by people today, but by future generations."

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Andy Murray's 2013 season got off to a shaky start Thursday with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Janko Tipsarevic in the opening match of the World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament.

Two early breaks in each set helped Tipsarevic dispatch the third-ranked Murray. The Serb next faces Nicolas Almagro, a late replacement for Rafael Nadal who pulled out of the tournament with a stomach bug.

"It's not every day that you get to play a Grand Slam champion and an Olympic gold medalist," said Tipsarevic, who is ranked No. 9. "I know it's an early-season tournament but I can tell you that the six of us take this very seriously."

"I knew I could beat Andy as I have beaten him before," he added. "He's a totally different animal now as he won a Grand Slam and Olympic gold so beating him here has given me confidence. Both of us have very similar games so it's great to come out on top."

In Thursday's other match, fifth-ranked David Ferrer defeated sixth-ranked Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4 to set up a semifinal against top-ranked Novak Djokovic, who won the tournament last year. Ferrer easily won the first set after jumping to a 5-0 lead. He broke serve early in the second.

"I played well today and I was surprised as it has been a long time without playing a competition," Ferrer said. "It's a fast court and this was the first time I played at night but I played a good game. I will enjoy a victory for now, but tomorrow I will have to play my best against Novak."

Djokovic said winning the French Open ? the only Grand Slam tournament he has yet to capture ? is his top goal of the year.

"I managed to have the best year of my career in 2011 and I knew that it was going to be difficult in 2012 to maintain No. 1 in the world and play consistently," Djokovic said. "I did, and so this year was an even more successful year from a psychological aspect. ... Ambitions are always high and I want to win every Grand Slam and major tournament I play, and this year is no different."

Soccer-Vilanova will be back in 15 to 20 days, say Barca

Dec 28 (Reuters) - Barcelona president Sandro Rosell says coach Tito Vilanova, who suffered a recurrence of cancer in his saliva glands earlier this month, will be back at work midway through January.

Vilanova underwent surgery on Dec. 20, a day after the club announced that the 44-year-old's condition had returned. He first had treatment in 2011.

"He'll be back within 15 or 20 days, but he must spend some days at the hospital and rest," Rosell told reporters in Dubai on Friday.

"He will mix work with his treatment. The most important thing is his health. Right now football comes second," added Rosell.

Barcelona have made a record-breaking start to their first season under Vilanova, who replaced friend Pep Guardiola at the helm at the end of the last term, by dropping only two points in 17 matches to lead La Liga by nine points.

Assistant Jordi Roura is taking charge in his absence. Barca's next league match is at home to city rivals Espanyol on Jan. 6. (Writing by Tom Pilcher, Editing by Mark Meadows)

Haitian president to sing with Julio Iglesias

(AP) ? Haiti's singer-turned-president is returning to the international stage.

President Michel Martelly will sing two songs with Spanish singer Julio Iglesias at a benefit concert Friday in the Dominican Republic. Martelly has made several impromptu performances in Haiti since he was elected in May 2011. But the show in Casa de Campo will be his first performance outside Haiti for the artist known as "Sweet Micky."

Concert organizer George Nader says proceeds will go to the Pink and White Foundation, a charity run by Martelly and his wife, Sophia.

Among those expected to attend are Henry Kissinger and designers Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta.

Martelly was known for often bawdy performances before he was elected president of a country struggling to recover from a January 2010 earthquake.

NuVo P100 Wireless Player

The NuVo P100 Wireless Player ($479 list) plays little brother to the flagship $600 P200 Wireless Player. Like its brethren, the P100 is a combination stereo amplifier and wireless?media hub dedicated to music playback, with support for dual-band Wi-Fi and MIMO. The idea is that you buy P100s for smaller rooms with smaller speakers, and P200s for larger rooms, and then control the entire NuVo system from your iOS or Android device, with the ability to play back different music streams on each system.

The P100 is?not a particularly good value, though, thanks to its still-high price, weaker amplifier, and smaller feature set. But it's fine for use in smaller rooms that don't need the P200's additional power or Bluetooth wireless streaming.

Design and Connections
For more on how the NuVo system works, start with our P200 review. Here, I'll focus on the differences between the two devices.

The 1.35-pound P100 looks like a shrunken P200, measuring 1.65 by 7.36 by 4.53 inches (HWD). Like its larger sibling, it's made entirely of black plastic, with opposing vertical and horizontal curves on the left and right edges of the front panel, respectively. On the front, there's one less button, since the P100 lacks Bluetooth streaming capability; instead, you get just the pair of volume capacitive touch buttons and the Mute button, along with the combination power and status LED.

Around back, everything is almost the same as well. You get an Ethernet port, a USB port, four gold 5-way binding posts, standard-size 3.5mm line in and line out jacks, a hardware power switch, and a port for the power cord. The power supply is still internal, which is a nice touch, as no one likes wall warts. The only difference from the P200 is that the P100 lacks the 3.5mm setup mic port, which isn't a big loss, as the P200 manual says the port is for "future use" only.

Setup, Performance, and Conclusions
You set up the P100 in much the same fashion as the P200. The biggest bummer in the P100's setup process is also what makes it such a good unit for wireless streaming of lossless audio: It requires the additional GW100 Gateway, which is another $199, if you want to use the system wirelessly. Otherwise, you have to plug it straight into your wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Aside from that, the setup process is the same, via the free iOS or Android app that you download and install on your mobile device. NuVo P100 Back

The P100's 20-watt-per-channel amplifier is considerably less powerful than the 60-watt x2 amp in the P200. That's by design, of course; the P100 is meant for use in a smaller room in the house, such as a home office, a bedroom, or a small study, and still sounds good in that context. One other note: Unlike the P200, the P100 isn't capable of driving 4 ohm speakers; it only works with 6 ohm and 8 ohm speakers. Most of the time, this isn't a problem, but if you've got an old pair of PSB Stratus Minis or similar bookshelf speakers, you'll want to go with the P200.

My biggest problem with the P100, though, is its price. The $600 P200 was already expensive, but you lose quite a lot for just $120 in savings. The P200 has a much more powerful amp, aptX Bluetooth streaming capability, and the Audyssey dynamic volume circuitry. Still, if you're committing to a multi-room NuVo Wireless Audio System, the P100 could be just the thing for the smaller rooms in your home.

Boosting Enrolment into Vocational and Technical Education

Programs in Nigeria

By:

Igbinedion, V. I.1 & I. J. Ojeaga1

Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin

(International Education Studies; Vol. 5, No. 4; 2012)

ARTICLE REVIEW:

The authors has discussed about to address issues of youth unemployment, poverty and international competitiveness in skills development towards current and projected opportunities and challenges. Numerous reforms in vocational and technical education programs over the years, they still remain greatly detested by students and parents in Nigeria as evidenced in low enrolment when compared with sciences, engineering, banking and finance, and medicine.

The authors was also describe that technical and vocational education in Nigeria is so misconstrued that it has become extremely difficult in management perspective, to administer the program to meet societal ever changing needs. Presently, the program is bedeviled by many challenges that hinder the realization of its objectives as specified by the National Policy on Education of Federal Government of Nigeria (2004). One of these challenges is low enrolment. It is the concern of that enrolment into technical and vocational programs may be low not because Nigerian youths are lazy nor do not want to use their hands to work. But it may be because many Nigerians do not fully understand the benefits, scope and content of the program and lack of vocational or career education and occupation information services to students while in or out of schools.

The authors also mentioned that many of them make choices without proper understanding of their abilities, interests and attitudes. Most of the young people are said to select occupations like medicine, engineering, accounting mainly because of the positions and prestige attached to the job and not necessarily as a result of conscious assessment of the individual?s interests and abilities. Therefore, career education may be a veritable means of providing career awareness and information services to students in order to improve enrolment in vocational and technical education in Nigeria. Students, parents and the society at large look unto the school to help the adolescents and youth make career decision based on realistic abilities, interests and availability. Therefore, it is required to use of career education and occupation information services in boosting enrolment in vocational and technical education programs in Nigeria.

In addition, from the author?s research, they are also identified some of the factors responsible for low enrolment in TVET in Nigeria which are:

1.? Poor Societal Perception: Many people are yet to understand the meaning, scope and content of vocational and technical education. Some view it as education for the handicapped or education for those who cannot cope with the sciences. (Osa-Edoh ,2008)

2.??? Poor Societal Attitude: The attitude of people towards vocational and technical education contributes to the problems in teaching the subject. It notes that in schools, the teacher could be teaching people who are not interested in the subject that is being taught. (Idialu, 2007).

3.???Elitism: Elitism could be described as the belief of a group in society that because of superior privileges, power and talent they tend to hold on to this belief through a system of education that will sustain this group?s interest. (Oviawe and Anavberokhai, 2008).

4.??? Poor Entry Level: Students who enroll in vocational and technical education programs are considered to have low aptitude. The technical schools find it hard to attract good students because there is a strong misconception that they are reserved for the never-to- do-wells and other negative by-products. Those admitted because they cannot find other things to do barely pass through the program because of poor aptitude and attitude. (Oviawe and Anavberokhai, 2008).

5.?? Lack of Recognition: There is a low recognition associated with manual labor in Nigeria. Unlike her counterparts in developed countries, the skilled craftsman does not enjoy the same recognition. (Oviawe and Anavberokhai, 2008).

6.????Discrimination against Graduates of Technical and Vocational Education: There is also the problem of unhealthy perception or discrimination against technical graduates. It was stated that this discrimination is virtually visible amongst graduates of technical schools (technical college, monotechnics, colleges of technology, polytechnics) and university graduates. Up till now, the former is being managed by National Board for Technical Education while the latter is under the supervision of National Universities Commission. countries, the skilled craftsman does not enjoy the same recognition (Ogidefa, 2010).

DISCUSSION

From the above, it shows that the TVET programmes in Nigeria are still not being acceptable by most of the people. Low prestige given to the TVET is the most factors that hinder the participation of the students to the TVET. Other factors like discrimination to the TVET programme, poor entry level to TVET, elitism, etc are also will become crucial if no actions taken to this issue. It is agreed that it was difficult to the government in enhancing or rebranding the educational systems especially TVET as it requires a lot of financial support and resources. However, due to the current globalization of the economy systems, the government of Nigeria needs to do something in promoting TVET as the economy will grow with the support from the TVET. The growth of the country is actually depending on how many unemployed in that country. The less number of unemployed, the more established the country. Few actions can be taken in promoting TVET like career conference, field trip, collaborating industrial training, providing career information center, etc.

Factbox: Profiles of key ministers in Japan PM Abe's new cabinet

TOKYO (Reuters) - New Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his cabinet line-up on Wednesday after being voted in by parliament. Abe, a security hawk who quit as premier in 2007 after a troubled year in office, has made beating deflation and taming a strong yen with drastic monetary policy and big public works spending his first priority.

Below are brief profiles of key cabinet ministers.

TARO ASO (Finance Minister, Deputy Prime Minister)

A fan of "manga" comics and the grandson of a prominent post-World War Two premier, Aso served as prime minister from 2008-2009, leading his Liberal Democratic Party to a crushing defeat in August 2009. Well-versed in micro-economic matters, Aso crafted massive stimulus packages to try to offset the impact of the 2008 financial crisis. Scion of a wealthy family, he has been criticized for gaffes that offend groups from the elderly to parents but praised for being able to charm people at close range. Aso once upset South Korea with remarks that seemed to praise Japan's 1919-1945 colonial rule, but as premier forged good ties with Seoul and kept relations with China steady. Aso will also hold the financial services portfolio.

AKIRA AMARI (Minister for economic revival)

A former trade and industry minister, Amari worked briefly for electronics giant Sony Corp before entering politics as an aide to his lawmaker father and then winning election to the lower house in 1993. He is close to both Abe and Aso, having served in their cabinets. And he has taken credit for the LDP's "economic revival plan" aimed at beating deflation and a strong yen. He remained in favor of nuclear power after the 2011 Fukushima radiation crisis and as trade minister pushed resource diplomacy.

YOSHIMASA HAYASHI (Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries)

Hayashi, who graduated from Tokyo University and Harvard, served in the previous Abe cabinet in 2006-2007 as a junior minister. Known for his expertise on economic and fiscal policy and close ties to the United States, Hayashi also held the post of defense minister briefly in 2008 and economics minister in 2009. He was a proponent of easy monetary policy and setting up a hotline with China to facilitate diplomatic talks to improve relations.

NOBUTERU ISHIHARA (Environment and nuclear crisis minister)

Ishihara came in behind Abe and ex-defense minister Shigeru Ishiba in the September LDP leadership race. The son of outspoken nationalist Shintaro Ishihara, a former governor of Tokyo who now leads the right-leaning Japan Restoration Party, he is seen as less extreme in his views than his father. Ishihara has previously served as transport and administrative reform minister, and was party secretary-general until Abe was elected party chief.

FUMIO KISHIDA (Minister of Foreign Affairs)

Kishida entered politics after working at the now-defunct Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan and previously served as a state minister in charge of issues related to Okinawa island - host to the bulk of U.S. military forces in Japan - in Abe's first 2006-2007 cabinet. He is nominal head of an LDP faction previously led by the late Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and has an image as something of a foreign policy dove.

ITSUNORI ONODERA (Minister of Defence)

First elected to parliament's lower house in 1997, Onodera hails from Kesenuma in Miyagi prefecture, northeast Japan, hard-hit by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters. He twice served as parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs before becoming a senior vice-minister for foreign affairs in August 2007 under Abe's first administration.

TOSHIMITSU MOTEGI, (Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry)

A graduate of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and a former management consultant at McKinsey & Company, Motegi got his start in politics in 1993 in a small opposition party that helped briefly eject the then-ruling Liberal Democratic Party from power. But after the LDP returned to power, he joined the long-dominant conservative party and went on to hold a number of posts, including vice foreign minister, vice trade minister and financial services minister.

HAKUBUN SHIMOMURA (Minister of Minister of Education)

An ultra-conservative close to Abe, Shimomura shares the incoming prime minister's desire to rewrite Japan's wartime history with a less apologetic tinge and put more patriotism in school curriculums. He also shares Abe's long-held goal of revising the 1947 pacifist constitution. He has previously served as parliamentary secretary for education and deputy chief cabinet secretary, the latter in Abe's first administration.

SADAKAZU TANIGAKI (Minister of Justice)

The Liberal Democrats picked Tanigaki, a former finance minister, as its new leader following their devastating defeat in 2009. A fiscal conservative, Tanigaki helped outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda push through legislation to double Japan's 5 percent sales tax by 2015 to help curb bulging public debt. But the gentlemanly Tanigaki came under fire for failing to get Noda to make good on a promise to call an election "soon", and he did not run in the September party leadership vote that picked Shinzo Abe as his successor.

ICHITA YAMAMOTO (Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs)

Yamamoto graduated with a master's degree from Washington's Georgetown University and worked for the United Nations Development Programme before winning election to parliament's upper house in 1995 from his father's constituency. Like Abe, Yamamoto has taken a tough line toward North Korea. He is a prolific blogger, played in a rock band in college and appears often on TV talk shows.
