Short Story Slore: Book Review: Just After Sunset by Stephen King

Confession - I am a huge Stephen King fan.? Also, I'm writing this review without the actual book in front of me.? My dad was in town last weekend and being the reason I picked up my first King book, I gave it to him without?it occuring to me that?I still had to review it.? Oh well.? This will just be done from memory and without quotes.

Just After Sunset consists of 13 short stories, most of which?King began writing after being the guest editor of 2007's Best American Short Stories collection.? He includes a great intro that explains how he wrote short stories early on in his career and this collection is his attempt to get back to it after being inspired by the readings for BASS.? Some of these are rewrites of previously published stories or some that he wanted to make readily available to his readers that missed them before.
?
If you don?t like Stephen King?s writings, you won?t like this collection.? Each story takes a turn towards violence and/or horror ? a cat killing off a group of people, a woman stumbles upon a dead body and is then kidnapped, to something evil lurking in the woods that is causing people to kill themselves when they come across it.

That being said, I think anyone who is a fan of King will really enjoy this collection.? I found myself getting sucked into all of the stories except for two.? They were also the stories King explains came to him in a dream, but I just didn't connect to them like I did with the others.? There?s a section at the end that explains the thought process and inspiration for each of his stories and I highly recommend reading each note as you finish a story.? It's quite intriguing to see how he comes up with his bizarre (because his imagination is so much more creative than mine!) story ideas.

It amazes me how King has a way of taking some simple story idea we?ve all probably read before? women comes across dead body, gets tied up by killer, then tries escaping ? but makes it his own by giving her a background (her baby girl died and the way she?s dealing with the death and failed marriage is by running miles and miles everyday) and it is because of this coping mechanism that she is able to try to escape the murderer chasing after her.??The entire time King slowly builds?suspense while keeping an incredible pace?so even though it's a longer story in this collection, you cannot put it down.? ("The Gingerbread Girl")

The other story I fell in love with is ?The Things They Left Behind? about a man who didn?t made it to work in the World Trade Center the day of the 9/11 attacks.? Consquently he deals with survivor's guilt with a King twist on the items linked to his former co-workers.??Read the note in the back about why King wrote this story - he makes a good point.

Overall I highly recommend it, even the last story ("A Very Tight Place")?at the end that ruined lunch for me with all of his detail.? Read it!
