Michele Bachmann may have the full attention of GOP primary voters, but her husband, Marcus Bachmann, keeps on making news.A story by Daily Caller reporter Matt Lewis on Marcus Bachmann's campaign reimbursements is the latest signal of increased focus on Michele Bachmann's spouse. Lewis's piece suggests the congresswoman may have violated election law by reimbursing her husband $6,230 for mileage in 2006, while noting her past history of financial report irregularities.
Marcus Bachmann, a clinical therapist, has also netted a good deal of media interest thanks to the Christian counseling business he co-owns with his wife. That clinic has been the subject of controversy with former patients claiming it offers"cures" for homosexuality.
Other commentators have ventured into the dynamics of the couple's marriage itself, to question whether the traditional brunt of the congresswoman's evangelical beliefs--which firmly stress submission to her husband as the head of the household--could contradict or complicate her role as leader of the free world.
"How can a woman who believes in submitting to her husband's will aspire to be president of the United States? Is she going to have to ask Marcus' permission every time she wants to throw a state dinner?" Slate reporter Libby Copeland posed in a story on Bachmann's beliefs published last month.
And Marcus Bachmann's own stated beliefs are increasingly drawing scrutiny as his wife's campaign gathers momentum. Throughout his wife's political career, he has largely avoided the spotlight, but he has made multiple appearances on Christian radio--but now comments from those appearances are stoking controversies as well. In one segment, he appeared to compare gay people to "barbarians"--but he has issued a statement saying that the online version of has been doctored and that he believes no such thing.
